Wardrobe basics every woman should have?
Ah yes, footwear!
- I'd add a pair of neutral pumps or slingbacks which coordinate with many different things for spring and summer.
- At least one formal dress or gown which is always ready just in case (my personal favorite thing to buy). There's an event coming up in a few weeks I'm supposed to attend and when I asked my husband what the dress code was today, he said, very quickly: "Formal... but you don't need a new dress!"

I recently bought a black shell and oatmeal-colored one in the same style (cashmere blends, oh-so-comfortable), and I think I could wear them every day of the week. Makes me excited to get dressed in the morning if it's a day that I have chosen to wear one of them that day!
I also have a pair of black and a pair of brown boots (tall) with a slight heel that I like to wear with skirts.

Some of these are, of course, accessories, however, I find them essential (for me, at least):
Good quality watch
Pearl necklace and earrings
A scarf or a pashmina (sp?) shawl (I can think of many uses for these)
A suit in a basic color that fits your (warm or cold) skin undertones. This would be something that you can wear together or as separates, dress up or down.
A great quality coat and gloves
A fitted t-shirt (petit bateau?)
A really nice belt (personally I am torn between the idea of having something understated and an Hermes one)
This will be completely off-topic, but how can one forget perfume?

Well ladies, this is my first step into your department which after six months I thought was time to do, since some of you so generously and regularly offer your time on us gents!
I would add to this thread that I always love to see a woman dressed in black. It's so becoming for both thin and large ladies whether blond or auburn haired and the choice of fabrics and finishes is endless - think crushed velvet, for instance, which has the warm touch of bohemia about it - then there's satin which is very sensual, especially for evening wear - while for professional presentation a black barathea trouser suit looks the bees knees - and then, of course, the little black dress which never dates - but last and not least, even a large outsize black teeshirt over black jeans!
The great skill with all these is to be able to successfully add little splashes of bright colour here and there - a scarf or shoes or wide bangles, but the ultimate accessory for black is the addition of silver jewellery (more so than gold in my view) - such items as lots of jangling narrow bangles or a large chunky necklace, but the most elegant touch for professional presentation is always just pearl earings and no other jewellery.

Hi Vettriano-man! I couldn't have agreed more. I have been wearing silver jewelry with black for as long as I can remember. But these days, I've just about had it with silver and platinum jewelry! My husband recently bought me a pair of these stunning and intricately designed gold earrings from India instead. He said that great Hollywood female lengends used to wear gold with black (or any color for that matter) all the time. But I just couldn't do it
until I recently saw Jean Simmons in a TV interview, and she was clad all in gold - no silver - and she looked stunning! [:0] So I finally mustered the courage to wear those gold earrings with black, and - WOW - compliments left and right! [:0] V-man, I don't recall having recieved not even one stinkin' compliment wearing silver or pearls! I looked like everyone else! [V]So ladies, if you're absolutely fed up playin' it safe, then it's time to step up to the plate and channel your inner Coco Chanel, Katherine Hepburn, Jackie, or any of those great, fantastic fashion icons! As for wardrobe basics, Carolina Herrerra suggested a clean, crisp buttoned white shirt (surprise, surprise), but she liked Banana Republic the best (WOW, you've got be kidding, me?). I thought I'd give it a shot, and she's right! Not bad at all. I prefer the stretch material vs. the others. With the right white shirt, mix it up with the right skirt, shoes, and accessories that will stand you out from the rest of us. Hopefully, if you're gonna wear silver jewelry, V-man will be around to compliment you
Otherwise, I'm puttin' my money on gold. As I type this in Texas, the forecast is for 90 degrees, so I suggest linen and lighter colors as basic to the wardrobe. Linen feels cool to the skin. I like all the different weights of linen as well as linen knit. Beige, taupe, and white are good basic and practial colors in Texas. They make one feel cooler.
