I have three waistcoats, but am finding it time to have another made. I have seen them with no lapel, a notch lapel, and shawl lapels. Is there rule in regards to this or any standard that should be followed?
I don't think there are rules per se, although a sensible guideline might be to limit mixing and matching of lapel types between jacket and waistcoat - you might wish to avoid wearing a peaked lapel waistcoat with a notched lapel jacket, for example.
My personal preferences are as follows:
s/b peak lapel jacket, no lapels on waistcoat if s/b, peak if waistcoat d/b
s/b notched lapel jacket, notched lapels on s/b waistcoat
d/b peak lapel, no lapels on waistcoat
I don't generally care to wear shawl lapels during the day (an idiosyncracy of mine.)
