The first issue of Esquire, a mass-market monthly publication spun off of Apparel Arts magazine, was published in 1933. Only one issue was published, and it was September 1933. It contained the same sort of sartorial illustrations that appeared in Apparel Arts, and shared much of the same art work, though it was a smaller format publication, and the accompanying text was usually/always(?) different. These are its illustrations.

⇧ last pic: if to scale, quite the bold pattern size on those herringbone trousers.

I believe GQ came from or had originally been Esquire, if so and based on the last issue of GQ I flipped through at the tailor's earlier this week, it is not carrying the torch forward in any promising way.

I suspect the scale is somewhat exaggerated in an attempt to illustrate a vigorous, high-contrast herringbone cloth.

GQ is a successor publication to Apparel Arts. In the early '60's the publishers decided to turn Apparel Arts into a more general interest quarterly publication intended for public purchase, as contrasted to Apparel Arts which was sold mainly to retail menswear outlets, and to publish it alongside Esquire, as the amount of Esquire content dedicated to sartorial matters was slight.

I.e., there are a lot more wearers of men's clothing, than sellers, therefore = $$$.
