My mother-in-law has two Burberry trench coats that were purchased about 20 years ago. They both have a navy blue label that reads "Burberrys". Does anybody know how much they are worth?
Its not like they are collectors items. They're worth whatever you think they are worth.

^ If you were buying a new Burberry or having one made up through their special order process (I don't know if they even do that any more?), they are indeed, pricey but, a used garment, Burberry or otherwise, is still a used garment. It will not become more valuable with time and use but rather, becomes of somewhat less value as the aging/wear takes place! :)

In my experience, whenever a salesperson says that something older is worth a lot of money, it is a subtle way of saying: "That is why we charge so much for the new version, look at how well the old one holds value". This seems to be true regardless of the item for sale.

Current Burberry trenches, even the custom numbers, are built to a standard that's laughable compared to the company's trenches of 20 yrs ago. I have two from the 80s which look brand new despite many years of hard wear. If you must have a new trench and can't bear the thought of a used coat, just get a London Fog because it's a lot less money and a better trench overall than what Burberry's doing today.

The new ones certainly look insubstantial in the stores. I wouldn't buy one.

For the original poster: We had a thread here last year about Burberry trenchcoats in which we posted some visual aids. These could be useful if you start eBay buying, so I suggest you start searching through the old threads.

Most mass-produced clothing does not hold it's value. There is no particular shortage of used Burberry trenchcoats, they made as many as they could possibly sell. Limited edition "designer" clothes in excellent condition, usually just women's however, can hold their value fairly well, as long as the particular style is still in vogue.

DocD,

While I agree that the prices are steep, I recall being quite impressed with my initial examination of a Burberry trench recently. I looked at a few different models, and thought that some were indeed flimsy, but remember being distinctly taken with the heft of the more classically flavored trench. This was about 4 months ago in the DC store - am I simply naive? Maybe the newer trenches are quite nice, but those from twenty years ago were outstanding?
