I posted some pics of the new charcoal colored velour (or velvet) blazer I got for christmas and you guys were nice enough to give me some alteration tips. Now that I have it back, do you guys have any recommendations on how to wear it? Its not really my kind of style, but the gf loves it, so how do I dress with this thing? I was thinking light colored dress shirts (white) with an open collar, darker wash dressier jeans, and black shoes or loafers. I was thinkin' this look would be cool for a decent restaurant or lounge. what do you guys think? Are there any looks that really make a velvet blazer look nice?

I'd wear it with a white shirt, dark colored ascot, dark jeans, and brown or black shoes. Or perhaps black trousers and a pair of nifty velvet slippers with a crest on the vamp, but still wear an ascot with it too.

You are not far off the mark but forget the jeans and go with some black wool pleated pants with cuffs in conjunction with black loafers. I would stick with the White shirt, maybe even wear it open at the neck (no tie) and with a button down collar. I don't think the jacket sounds particularly formal but don't go with jeans, its too informal. As for an ascot ... I really don't see it!

If you go with a button down collar oxford in white that would serve to provide the informal bit of the look. If every other thing goes informal the coat gets abandoned as the sole piece of slightly formal kit.

Similar opinion to Dean, but:
White shirt - french cuff
Plain or pinstripe black flat front trousers (prefer plain)
Black buckle shoes

If you want wear the jacket for other occasions, shirts from Etro or Duchamp would work well.


As for the ascot, no.

You pretty well got it in one.

I have a black velvet jacket that I get a lot of use out of (and like you, the girl loves it). Dark, classically dressy jeans, white shirt or more avant-garde one (Etro, Robert Graham, Duchamp etc.), black footwear. This is a great time to break out black Chelsea boots, something in suede, chukka's etc.

Don't wear a tie with it, nothing will really suit. Because the velvet swallows up light and your pants are dark, the shirt is what becomes the focus.

If you want to dress it up a bit, I wear a pair of dark grey, faintly PoW check flannel trousers.

I think I might try a shirt other than white, although it's hard to know without seeing it on.

I agree with those who say no to the ascot.

Just experiment and have fun with it.

Depending on the occassion I think dark jeans could work. I really like ascots, and silk scarves with an open collar. I guess some can't pull it off...

Bright shirt...

I'd go for the shirt to be the focal point. The Robt Graham was a good suggestion, but then many quality "sport" dress shirts are available now to punch up the look. Just keep the fabric smooth and well-pressed.

I'm not a fan of jeans--"dressy" or otherwise with anything other than a tee or work shirt; but whatever your taste, I'd suggest something neutral to keep the focus on the shirt and by its close association, the jacket.

How about some dressy paddock boots? (I can't imagine the crested slippers in 2009....) Presumably you'll want something comfortable enough for any dance opportunity that arises.

I like to wear mine with light grey flannels from BB, and a white point collar dress shirt with an interesting pattern and french cuffs. No tie. I would like to find a pair of trousers in PoW plaid as Mithras wrote, but haven't been able to find any in my size at a good price.
