I've been following a number of threads about shoes with interest. I'm very ignorant about the hierarchy of shoe brands and really just know the styles I like. Can some of the shoe experts on this forum explain the main variables that distinguish shoes like Edward Greens, Grensons, and other good English shoes (and I realize these are not all equal) from the Alden/Allen Edmonds level, and then the latter from the Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, Bostonian level. To keep it simple, let's just consider RTW. Quality of leather? Stitching? Construction details? Shape of the last? Durability? Some of these? All of these? Which are the most important? Details please.
