Birdland records a specialist jazz store is closing its doors after 17 years. It was the best place in Sydney for Jazz in particular Blue Note, Verve ECM ect.

Not only is it the end of an era, my passion for US Jazz knows no bounds. Fell in love with as a late teen and my son one day will inherit IMO a spectacular collection. Birdland is victim of greed and there being forced out of business by rising CBD rents which under the current circumstances make life hard for specialist shops.

But its demise not only signals the passing of an era, mind you it will be going on line, but the sense of participation and community that the store created over the years will pass with it. You could meet up with people there chew the fat over music and basically indulge a passion.

Last year they and the Opera House put some exclusive deals for Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins and a friend and got great seats to two of the best concerts i have ever attended.

I wonder two things. First can any one recommend a specialist jazz store with an online presence. And second what else in terms of specialist stores have disappeared these past few months and will they be missed and why?

All things considering it was a great store which will be sadly missed.

I don't know of any specialty online site. I use Napster Lite and have an Ion USB turntable in case I find anything interesting on vinyl, since there will likely never be digital releases of some more obscure musicians.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your favorite store. It's certainly not the only loss of a small specialized retailer in these times.

My only question is why you don't stick with them as the convert to an Internet-only retailer.
I will be sticking with them when they go on line but its that sevice you could get from staff who would infrom you of new music tours ect. And the request for a US store is that one day the Oz $ will have value again. I have bought a few things from Amazon but one is always on the lookout for new avenues to explore in terms of music.
