Hi,

What do you think of UK watch makers? Are there any good ones still left? I know of CWC who make the G10 for the armed forces, and Smiths who used to do that before them (and have now become an aircraft instrument manufacturer instead?).

I have heard of Graham, but they seem very avant garde and a little "out there"...also are they a British manufacturer or a Swiss firm using a British name?

Would love to know your views!

I think Dent may be the company you are thinking about.

That would be it.

Also I remember seeing in the window of the Asprey shop on Old Bond street some watches with blinding amounts of diamonds in them and a little sign saying they were the British diamond-setting specialists since sometime in the 1800's. Again the name escapes me because I had never seen or heard of them outside of the UK.

I used to know a terrible joke about why the English never really developed a watch industry because they couldn't figure out how to make them leak oil. It is connected in my mind with another about the English drinking warm beer because Lucas makes all the refrigeration.

It is just as well that I can't remember them.
