Recently I had a midnight blue dj made to measure. I was planning to wear it New Years Eve but then I thought why not to Christmas Eve and/ or Christmas dinner? Allways looking for a chance to wear it.

Both will be a family event where the other men will be in button down shirts at most. Since my family should know that by wearing a tuxedo I'm not trying to be show anyone up, and my daily attire includes at least a sportcoat(so I"m dresseir anyway), should I wear my dj?

If not I would probably wear a sportcoat and a tie.

A dinner jacket would be too much for Christmas. A sport coat and tie would be best. Christmas should be relaxed. But most people I know have their Christmas dinner in the afternoon, making the dinner jacket inappropriate in any case. If your family gathering starts before 5:00 PM, there is no need to consider the dinner jacket.

It sounds like there is a good chance that many of the other male members of the family don't own a DJ and that you will out dress them in a sport coat.

If that is the case, I would wear a cardigan and a tie. Even though you care more for clothes than some of them do, why take the chance of making family members uncomfortable on a festive occasion. Besides, a sport coat might be a minor nuisance when carving the turkey, serving drinks, playing with the kids, and suchlike.

Btw, I did not mean to imply that everyone needs a DJ. I have not had occasion to wear one since I took a cruise in 72.

Sportscoat, no tie - if wearing a shirt is an effort for them, then wearing a tie is too formal for the ocassion. You could wear a sweater/cardigan, without it looking odd.

No - do not overdress - that would merely make you the centre of (adverse) attention which is surely not your objective.

Follow the pack in the circumstances your describe.

I'll be wearing a smoking jacket at christmas dinner. It is less formal than a DJ + the other guests vill be dressed more formal (dark suit) themselves, so it's not a problem for me.

If your family gathering starts before 5:00 PM, there is no need to consider the dinner jacket.

Dinner jacket is always fine after sunset. The 6pm rule was instated to permit us to wear evening clothes in the summer.

I traditionally wear a cardigan, khaki slacks and a tie. Even for opening gifts with the family in the AM and as late as Christmas dinner. If it's dinner with the extended family, I generally add a blazer or sportscoat.

There are plenty of occasions to wear a DJ, but I doubt Christmas is one. I didn't even wear one to my university graduation (the robes would have covered it, and the party afterwards was casual dress.

If you must wear a DJ or smoking jacket, throw a Christmas party prior to the big day and make it clear that evening dress is appropriate.

Being practice I'd be worrying about spilling or being spilled on when your planning on wearing the garments again in 6 days. That creates a bit if a rush to and from the cleaners. Also, it is too formal for the setting and time of day.
