Son returning to college for a term involving job interviews. Any objections to these ties shown paired with these suits? Except that paisley multicolored one that he bought because it is in his faculty's colors. I know the purple geometric shouldn't be worn with the darker blue/charcoal suit and the navy and green rep should't be worn with the silver suit. Any other suggested combinations to avoid? Is that navy with red dots too dark for the silver suit?

Silver suit:

OK, this entirely just my opinion based upon experience (People can be weird about clothes, but you can drive yourself nuts trying to figure how!) and my personal biases.

Purple ties are a fashion thing, I'm not wild about them, and I suspect some weird old men might have a visceral hatred for them.

So, top pic: only the one on the right.

In the 2nd picture, from the left, the 4th & 6th only. I actually really like the green tie, and like it with the silver grey suit. But the same weird old man hasn't seen one like it before, and therefore thinks it's weird.

3rd pic: 2nd, 3rd & 4th are all classic and won't frighten the weird old man.

4th pic: 1st 3 ties. (Same as above.)

My vote is for the charcoal blue suit. I would only wear the following ties: navy with the small red, white and light blue flower pattern, burgundy textured solid and navy with white and light blue foulard.

A white solid shirt is best. I would do a wide (but not cut away) spread collar and French front with no pockets.

As for shoes, black laced cap toe oxfords with no brogues (a la the Crockett & Jones Connaught).

Wow, I didn't even realize there were two suits! They both look the same on my monitor.

But it doesn't affect my recommendations.

Can you wear Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders regimental stripes if you haven't served in that regiment (does it matter if the stripes go from left-down to right-up or the opposite)?

Not that I'm picky... I have boxers in that pattern... but I know the Brits can be a little touchy on this...

Are we locked into those two suits? I know you are very particular about colors and textures and faces and hair all working together and have put up some of the more interesting threads on those topics, but the term silver suit is conjuring up something from Hard Day's Night and the other one that you say is blue appears to be almost gorge-less. Did these suits come in a put-together kit? Just kidding.

However, they don't appear optimal from the limited view available. They fit him well? If so, go with them. Might want to keep the "silver" one away from any bulbs over 25 watts though.

What I have read in several sources is that the original UK regimental ties have the stripes running from right to left, and to differentiate the purely ornemental nature of the ties when worn in the U.S. such ties have the stripes running left to right. And also that when not worn in the UK, it's simply a handsome striped tie and not a poseur's attempt at borrowed honor.

Peak and Pine, thank you for your kind words.

I'm with you.

Yes might be locked into these two suits at least until he lands a coop job. He is 19. Last year I bought my 20 year old a new suit because he had outgrown his high school graduation suit. Then he grew more and put on muscle. Nit making that mistake again with his brother. Maybe I can give the big brother's new one or old high school grad one, if still around, to his younger brother.

The 19 year old wanted a suit for his high school graduation. He wanted a shiny silver one. An opportunity to say, "Hey, you did so well on your grades that if that is what you want, and we can find it, we'll get it." Of course I thought nobody sold shiny silver suits and my risk was zero. Turned a corner in a mall and, well, you never know.

Out of respect we'll retire the one that resembles the highlander regimental. It is lovely and we didn't know it resembles a regimental. Many will be unaware of the stripe direction distinction so he'll not wear it. They are good about things like this. When they were little they wouldn't wear the '72 Hockey Canada jersey due to Bobby Clarke's slash to Kharlamov.

Paraphrasing Robert De Niro's iconic line in the movie Taxi Driver, "you talkin about me? Are you talkin about me?" If so you are right...i do so hate purple ties! LOL. ;)

Maybe I'm a weird old man but I think that for a job interview you should stay away from a purple tie. I do not expect a 19 year old male to dress very well. It takes time and money to accumulate a nice wardrobe, neither of which the typical 19 year old has.

Thanks. He'll save the purple ties and maybe the silver suit for functions calling for faculty colors.

He'll wear the charcoal blue to the interviews. If there are two he can change ties and shirts and wear a square to one.

Thumbs up for all of them from me, except for the very light paisley. Seeing light ties with a white or light-colored shirt bugs me.

As for the difference between American and English striped ties, I've read (I don't claim to know if this is accurate) that the difference is which side is up when the fabric is cut.

I like the middle two best but they are all OK. I am a big fan of purple with gray/silver.

For the blue on the left, I like the 4th from left (red geo) and farthest right (burgundy)
Really 2d frm left only (navy)
1, 2 or 3.
