G. The Bruce has inaugurated a series of articles published through the superb mill and mercer, Fox Brothers. His first article is on the chambray shirt. Particularly popular through the '80's and '90's, but well bought both before and after. I love them!

:loveyou:

I find they go with and compliment just about everything, and usually attract a positive remark from wifey without breaking a sweat. ;)

Agree completely. And they seem pretty hard to find these days.
Chambray is a vague term I find, but I assume we're talking about the plain weave shirts that have the indigo colour texture of denim?

If so, Proper Cloth carries them.

I've one in their "Japanese Light Indigo Chambray", and it's pretty much what I wanted. It has faded naturally along the seams after each wash.

Nice piece by Boyer. I look forward to more pieces on the Fox Mills website, whether by him or others.

I used to have one or two chambray shirts, but I think they may have gone to Goodwill or got lost somewhere. The article and the discussion by our friends above have inspired me to keep an eye out for this kind of shirt when I go thrifting, or rarely, actually shopping for clothes!

That said, I also wondered what the actual differences are between chambray and denim shirting. They look very similar, although chambray is somewhat thinner than denim. I found a clear explanation here, on the Proper Cloth website referenced by delicious_scent (it's in the weave):

Good to know this. My thanks to Flanderian (and to Boyer) for pointing me in this direction and adding to my knowledge of clothing.

Oddly enough Sarge, I got a couple from a Restaurant Supply online store. Pretty good fit, BD and just about the heft of a serious OCBD.
Really! Restaurant Supply Online is my favorite source for kitchen equipment. I have to go give it a look. All the chefs I know about worship the place.

It was a restaurant supply. I just checked and it is labeled Edwards and It seems to be largely a store for hospitality uniforms. I bought two and am holding one back for a while unopened. They do shrink just a bit but the shirts really are sturdy.
Try Happy Chef. I think that is the name of the company.

The chambray shirts the USN issued were very nice. It's funny how most people think the nicest articles of clothing the Navy provided were pea coats, but I really liked the chambray shirts the most. They also issued very baggy broadcloth boxers I really liked. As for the pea coats, they were nice, but the reefer jackets the middies wore were much finer cloth and much warmer. Officer uniforms didn't include chambray. In fact most of the shirts for officer uniforms were kind of uninspired.

Must have owned at least a hundred chambray in my lifetime, wore them to death.
currently do not have any but that will be soon corrected.
LOL. This site and these people have incited me to go on more shopping binges than I could ever attempt to list here! A cruel financial reality....Yes, No? ;)

No worries. The solution is to get them both! Happy days. ;)
A rotation of four or five OCBDs is probably more than I need, but I like to have a selection that will go well with my other clothes. So this one is either/or. In casual non OCBD form I have canvas and denim, both in blue, from Bean, and that seems like enough when I also have five polos. I am over-shirted!
