I just attended a formal event and there are suddenly a lot more white/off-white/ivory DJ being worn up here in the high country. I feel left out.
I'd assume SBPL one button with besom pockets is still a given, but how heavy a fabric and in what color? Given a couple of hours outside before sunset and summer temperatures is this one time a blend might be a blessing?

Lapels

While peaked lapels are perfectly acceptable, the more casual effect of the shawl collar is ideally suited to this less formal jacket. Traditionally, the collars are self facing meaning that they are covered in the same fabric as the rest of the jacket.

Fabric

Unlined, lightweight natural fabrics are acceptable alternatives to the standard worsted wool. This includes cotton, gabardine and linen.

I have worn a so called white dinner jacket....

every summer for more years than I like to count. A single-breasted peak lapel with grosgrain facing is my favorite. I prefer a light-weight worsted wool. The wool wil be in an off white because this is just the way this natural fabric comes. Many brilliant white jackets are made of polyester, which is definitely what you don't want. Linen advocates, such as Will, just dont' mind the wrinkles, but I do. On a recent 'Suitable Wardrobe posting, he admitted that when wearing a linen suit, it needed to be pressed once before the day was over. If you get linen, it won't last a night of dinining and dancing without looking like you slept in it. A shawl collar is just a personal preference. I prefer peak. but Bogart's shawl collar looked awfully good in 'Casablanca'.

dj

scratch the gab it does not breath well.
linen and silk are better by about half, cotton about the same.
wool tropical always comes out ahead of the others.
i think it comes as light as 8 oz and goes up from there.
it breaths well and thats what keeps you cool.

Can you be more specific?

Can you recommend a good 8-9 oz. off-white tropical for summer DJ? What would wear best in the heat - meaning which fabric will hold it's drape and be sturdy enough over the years? Long term value. Drapers? H&S? Is there a Lesser you like?

PM if you prefer.

Not so, as it's linen suit trousers that crumple the most and you wouldn't be wearing those. The 13/14 ounce jacketings will rumple a bit at the sleeves but a night of dancing doesn't put much of a dent in it otherwise.

I've been thinking about having a summer dinner jacket made.

When I do, I will almost certainly go with a single button and self-faced peak lapels. I would go with the lightest weight tropical worsted wool fabric I could find, definitely in ivory. I would also go with half-lined. The pockets would be besom, it would have short side vents (my winter dinner jacket has no vents), and the buttons would be covered with the same fabric from the jacket. I'd get working sleeve buttons, because they're cool. I would just get black trousers instead of the midnight blue (like my winter rig).
