Hello everyone,

I purchased a medium gray Glen Plaid RL Black Label suit several years ago and long story short, I outgrew the pants beyond the magic of tailoring. However, the suit jacket still fits nicely and I'd like to salvage it somehow.

My questions is this.
  1. Can the suit jacket still be worn as an odd jacket?
  2. If so, what pant color/material combinations are acceptable to wear with this jacket?
Thanks in advance!

I think the jacket could pair nicely with charcoal wool gabardine or lightweight flannel trousers. People are going to tell you to change the buttons. I can't tell what the buttons are made of now, but there's no need to change them to make this work any better as a sports coat. Contrasting buttons do not make a jacket more of a sports coat. You'd want buttons that complement the jacket. Smoke mother or pearl buttons could look nice, as could grey corozo (if that isn't what is already on the jacket) or dark grey horn.

Yes, I'd wear it and as Matt suggested it could pair well with a number of things.

But just to alert it to its altered status, I'd change the buttons. Probably a darker shade in the brown family of horn.

Perhaps something like these -
