Hi all,

Looking for suit ideas for a wedding I have coming up in South Carolina in May. I live in the upper Midwest so wedding here are formal evening affairs to which I would typically wear a dark gray or blue suit with a tie. However, I believe this wedding will be a daytime affair and from what I understand will be held outside.

I've never been to Charleston before - let alone in May. Would a tropical weight suit be appropriate? Maybe in light gray or tan? Should I wear a tie or just open collar?

It might be appropriate to ask the hosts, or other Charleston residents who are attending the wedding, what the form is for weddings there in the early summer. I have not stayed for any length of time in that lovely city, but I have stayed in Hilton Head, not too far off. It does get warm there relative to Wisconsin where I live! That said, a light gray (dove gray) poplin suit and a bright tie would be perfect, in my humble opinion, for a daytime wedding. Light gray is the colour often preferred for morning suits and coats (at least in Britain and perhaps in Europe), and is often seen at weddings, either as the colour of the suit or the colour of a waistcoat or jacket. It's a colour that is a perfect ground or foil to a white shirt and a tie in maroon or navy tones/stripes.
