I know that clothing stores have been discussed in the area, but I'm curious about thrift stores and any other interesting places that I should seek out. Gustav has stranded us here a little longer than recently expected and the in-laws' place can get monotinous during the day.

I like the repeat botique jounior league thrift store on summar in memphis. there is a veterans thrift before that sometime has some good shoes there. I also like the goodwill on highland -not far from the other 2. Hope you are able to get back to nawlins soon.

I don't do any thirfting. Im a germaphobe, so thift stores don't work too well for me. If you have the time, you must go to Oxford. Its a trad/preppy mecca. Go to Landry's, Hinton and Hinton and Neilson's, all are on the square. Have lunch at Ajax Diner for country food or Proud Larry's for great bar food. You would really enjoy yourself.

I second a day trip to Oxford. It's only 60 miles from Memphis. The square is great. Plenty of shopping for your wife too. If you like books Square Books is nice. Also Off Square(older books and interesting stuff) and Square Books Jr. for the kids. Landry's is the best, Hinton & Hinton and Neilson's are nice as well. Landry's was having a big sale last weekend. Another place I like is National Menswear on West Jackson Ave. It's more "old man" type clothes as my wife would say, but I got a pair of Charleston Khakis for $41 last weekend. Ajax is great for home cooking. City Grocery for more upscale/fine dining. If you go, you must make a trip through campus. Stop and sit in The Grove for a while, maybe even get carry-out and eat lunch in The Grove. If you are into William Faulkner, a trip through his home, Rowan Oak, would be nice as well. Just about anyone you ask can tell you how to get there(it's near campus).

There is supposed to be a shoe store in Pontotoc, MS that sells Alden or Allen Edmonds or both at discounted prices. Have always meant to go, but haven't made it yet.

Nothing much of note here in DeSoto County. There is a store in Hernando that sells Southern Proper ties, polos, etc. It's called the Pink Zinia, located in Funderburk's Pharmacy building on Commerce.

Hinton and Hinton is having a "warehouse" sale (with supposedly deep discounts) at another location on the square. Last weekend was a football weekend but maybe there is some stuff left.

I went over to the warehouse sale last Saturday. A lot of nice stuff, mostly casual sportswear and suits and sportcoats. Everything is 50% off, which is actually less than some of it was when it was at the store. I think shirts go to 70% off in the store. There were a lot of options in shirts and outerwear, but the tailored stuff was all odd sizes. I dont think there was a single 44L in the store. It is worth a look though.

I appreciate the hardy accolades for Oxford. I had the chance to visit there once before but wanted something closer to Memphis since I didn't think I would be able to make it down to Oxford. But to my surprise my wife informed me that she wanted to travel there tomorrow. I hope to provide updates and maybe some pictures.

Oxford was fun but somewhat rushed. There weren't any sales except a very limited selection in Landry's. I had a nice conversation with who I assume was the owner of Landry's and a clothing representative. I encouraged him to look into grosgrain watch bands, I thought they would be popular with his clientel. It was also interesting to note that he sold Perlis crawfish polos. He said they sell well (a couple a dozen a week).

I didn't find the Hinton and Hinton warehouse sale. I didn't think about it until we had left and there wasn't a sign nor did any employee mention one.

National Menswear was an interesting stop. The highlight was 50 cent bottled cokes. They had a mixture of berle trousers and carhart garb.

You most likely spoke with Stan, who is indeed the owner of Landry's. I try to buy all of my clothing there now. I've shopped a lot of places, and havent found a store that equals their combination of great brands and amazingly friendly service. He certainly has correctly pegged the market in Oxford (preppy). They've been selling clothes since the 1890s. Hes in the process of adding some cool new lines like John H Daniel custom suits. What did you think of Hinton and Hinton? They really are a 180 from Landry's. Their sales staff used to be quite cold-shouldered, but seem much nicer now that I stop in and purchase items more frequently.

Hinton and Hinton, like most shops on the square, is simply done well. It's a neat shop with a great atmosphere. The service was surprisingly friendly, I've been in there before when it was a little cold. They had some great products but you're correct it is a 180 from Landry's. Consider the prominence of stylish XMI shirts - they were a real turnoff.

While Distinctive may have a bias point of view, I have an outsider's perspective, and I agree Oxford can be snooty. It's a great town and really enjoy the dynamic of the small town feel combined with great shopping, but I don't understand the air of superiority. But I hail from South Carolina and we can have the same attitude about our state.
