Hello all! I'm asking for some advice (or maybe just validation) on what color shoes are appropriate to wear with this John Varvatos jacket. I bought it because I thought it would be a versatile piece, but the more I try to match it up with items, the more restricted I feel. I've been only wearing it with black, due to the black in the plaid and the black buttons, but I've been thinking about changing the buttons in order to give myself more options.

I put my AE Neumora in black and AE Jefferson in (dark) brown next to it for reference. Any opinions would be appreciated!

*I apologize for the poor-quality iPad pictures

There are two ways to approach a B&W glen. The first is to think of it as being composed of black (and white). That does limit options, since you essentially are stuck with trousers in shades of grey, or perhaps totally outlandish primary color stuff, and black shoes. On the plus side, blue, pink, and white shirts can all work.

The second approach is to think of it as being grey, and wearing it as though it were a neutral, susceptible to being "pulled" into warmer tones. That would open up tan or olive trousers, brown shoes, layering, etc. You'll have to try it and see if there's enough warmth in the tones to carry this off. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've been wearing black, flat-front slacks. I may try to wear it with a pair of tan dress slacks if I go with brown shoes... The buttons are just throwing me off...
Ya, that's why I was wondering what pants you wear because with beige it would look better with brown I think. I can understand seconding guessing because of the black button but I don't think it would be prominent enough in your outfit that it should determine what color shoes you wear.

If you wear black trousers, the black double monks are a very good choice, especially if you wear a black cashmere turtleneck under the jacket. Great evening ensemble for art events or clubbing.

I usually wear charcoal trousers (never black) and black shoes with a very similar sports coat. Yours is best that way since the buttons are black. If it had brown buttons (medium to dark brown) I'd be more willing to wear it with fawn-coloured trousers and brown shoes if the buttons were brown.
