Hey All,

Theres a ton of good talk on here about tuxedo shirts but none that I can find that address what I'm after. I'm putting together an outift that I can wear to formal events. It consists of:

1. BB's Tuxedo Pants in black
2. Hickey Freeman Velvet Dinner Jacket (Peak Lapel). It is all black and all velvet (important later)
3. Black velvet bow tie
4. Black Patent leather lace ups

I'm now looking for a Tuxedo shirt for an event I have at the end of March. I've read here, reddit MFA, black tie guide and other sources on whats proper etc but I also want to look comfortable so there is where things become tricky...

I really hate the look of the bib shirts, if I have to I'm going for pique. I can't stand it. I'm open to it in a pinch. I'm also looking for something a bit nicer.

I went to BB's Eaton, Charles Thyrwitt, Thomas Pink and nobody seems to have exactly what I have in mind which is:

White, no bib (possibly weave type fabric to give the appearance of a bib, if that makes sense) and a plain front with a place for shirt studs.

The reason Im after shirt studs is that with a plain black jacket, there will be a lot of white space and want to break it up with gold and MOP studs. It's also why I am not wanting to opt for Eaton's non bib option with a hidden placket.

I also assume it's not proper to get a shirt with regualr sewn buttons? I want studs anyway.

So, does this shirt exist? (White, no bib, plain front with studs) in a decent quality shirt? Hell, at this point I'm open to almost any quality. I'd love to hear of any options that I can get to USA by end of the month.

Why are you against the bib front (just curious):

"Plain front" - so no pleats?

Just trying to see if I understand your request...

BTW, there is no 'rule' against sewn in buttons on the shirt, but I get your point of wanting to break up the white and black.

Thanks for the reply!

I don’t know. I’m just not a fan of how it looks. It feels tacky and dated to me. I think it’ll look terrible if you ever had your jacket off.

Plain as in no pleats!

So I could go with just regular buttons? Good to know but still would prefer studs. I may also buy a pique bib and take home to see if I can live with it.

I ran into an example of formal shirt by Michelsons London:

where buttonholes are made on both front panels on the placket. The maker also provides a stripe of fabric sewed with buttons so that it can be closed with buttons only. I think that is a very clever design/thought. Unfortunately, I think it is texture so not solid white. But it can look white from a distance.

Maybe it is too late to get it from London now, but you can check again to see if there are formal shirts that meet your criteria while also accepting studs. Shopping online is somewhat difficult to determine this so you might need to do the new *offline shopping* with no shipping charge and instant delivery. ;)

So I went to get a Gitman shirt and they are SOLD OUT IN MY SIZE ON THEIR SITE! My event is Friday so it's getting urgent now.

I see there are some other Gitman stockists online but they are all these shady looking tux4less.comtype sites that a) I'm unsure if they are reputable or b) don't state the fit ot the shirt. I am looking for this shirt in a tailored fit: https://www.gitman.com/products/broadcloth-pique-tuxedo-shirt

Anyone recommend some gitman stockists I can get the shirt before Friday?

I think Gitman is carried by some exceptionally fine retailers including Eljo's and Hunter and Coggins.

I bought one of these Michelsons shirts two years ago; the texture looks to me to be more micro-mini-herringbone than pique, but it is very comfortable and shows "quiet" studs very well. This year I bought a David Donahue similar shirt in pique. I have half a dozen pleated shirts but I don't think I will be wearing them anymore (sigh).
