Hi,

I'm considering this sports jacket, which is navy with a black check pattern:

I'm wondering what color pants and what color shoes could be worn with this jacket for casual scenarios. Does the black in the jacket suggest that black shoes would be more appropriate than brown? What about the pants--I could imagine charcoal grey, navy or possibly black.

What do you guys think would work here?

Thanks.

I’m not entirely convinced that it’s a sport coat or an orphaned suit jacket. I believe it could pass for the former though.

I think shades of gray or even a dark green would work. As for shoes, either snuff or brown suede. If calfskin, medium to dark browns.

You could do black slacks and shoes, but it’s not a look I fancy.

Dark grey to mid grey pants, chocolate to snuff suede or dark brown to mid brown shoes. Black shoes are not wrong here, if you prefer them. With brown shoes I would do an orange, rust or brown tie if you're going to wear one, either solid or a large pattern like medallions. With black shoes I would look at orange, blue, grey, or red for the tie. A simple white square IMO would do best there but I seldom wear more than two patterns at one time.

Did you have a look at some of the other close-up photos? I didn't think it was an orphaned suit jacket. That would be a bummer.

Not to worry, he always says that. I posted a picture of me mum here once and he thought she was an orphan. Nice jacket. Pricey for used. Pair with khaki colored khakis. No tie or air tie. The pair with khaki colored khakis thing, that's something I too always say.

Just hedging. Recall what I said; "I'm not entirely convinced". Very non-committal on the matter.

Seriously though, it's a nice jacket.

I do like Tod's suggestion of black horsebit loafers. I would avoid navy or blue slacks though.

As for Peak and Pine's suggestion, I think khaki would work as well. Though everything is too pricey for him. Then again, he opts for a plunger and pot of boiling water over a washing machine, so I suppose he's at least consistent.

After close examination, I found something: the buttons (shell and shanked) shown in the last picture are different from the ones used on the front (4 holes horn (effect?)). Someone may have switched the buttons, but not completely.

Or I need my eyes checked...

Anyhoo, the pattern looks like OSJ, but I think it could pass as a sports coat, and that is my opinion as others may disagree. As to the pairing, lighter shades of grey or brown could work. I also think lighter shade of blue (air force blue and lighter) could also work as a quasi-uniform look, and that is IMHO.

Oh, shoes. Anything dark brown/burgundy or black for unimaginative choice.
