This may seem like an inane question but I have always wondered about this and this forum seems the right place to ask the question.
What is the purpose of the loop of fabric that hangs off where the box pleat meets the yoke on a shirt? Did this once have a use but has become a vestigial component that has survived for no reason?
Is it perhaps to run the back of braces through??
You don't see this piece as often as you did in the past. I only had one shirt with this component and it is an old shirt that was given to me (pretty low quality). Why would it only be on cheaper shirts?

If John Bull turns round to look after you, you are
not well dressed; but either too stiff, too tight, or too fashionable.
