Hello all,

This probably gets discussed a lot, but anyway...I was raised by a decidedly preppy dad who is of the mindset that the button down collar is the ONLY way to go...ever. I love the button down too, and it is quite versatile. But of course there's a time and place for other collars as it's plain to see just by looking at other people sometimes.

Isn't a button down collar really inappropriate at night and/or with a really nice suit? What is the next best thing. Of course face shape plays into it.

I want to try and get a sense of the history, connotations, appropriate-ness of different shirt collars. Are wide spread collars more modern? Are they super-traditional? Are they more European? Which collars are more American? What is the connotation of each type of collar? Narrow point, spread, rounded point, button down, curved, etc.

Also, whats the history, purpose, connotation of the contrasting collar? That one intrigues me.

Please tell me everything you know guys.

Thanks a lot!

Danny
