Hello dear fellow,

I am a young chap, Asian, who is (unfortunately) a bit on the heavy side. It is actually not such a terrible concern, except it is paired with an extraordinarily large head (I have provoked many bemused comments thusly) and an equally short and wide neck.

I have fiddled with the standard suggestion of straight-point collars; they don't quite work. Recently I picked up a cutaway (Londoner) collared shirt, and it seems to induced a significant improvement. Partly I believe that because the collar is lower-set, the neck is actually showing.

I believe it has been suggested for the distance between the two collar points to match the width of the head.

Please discuss.

I'm sort of in the same boat--18-inch neck, size 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 hat.

I suggest you try some "classic" (i.e., moderate) spread collars from TM Lewin, Chas. Tyrwhitt, Coles, Thos. Pink (not a good value all around, but collar shape is OK), or Harvie & Hudson (great all-around value); and either the classic or cutaway collar from Hilditch & Key.

Tyrwhitt and H&K especially seem to scale their collar leaves fairly generously, so they're not overwhelmed by la gran cabeza.

I am sure there will be good shirts to be found even for, as you put it, la gran cabeza. I have found ordering custom-made from Brooks Brothers useful in that regard.

However, perhaps a more pertinent question would be one of appearance. You are probably familiar with those; those with disproportionately large crowns end up looking, well, disproportionate and somewhat abnormal. One of the more pressing concerns for folks like me is to minimise the appearance of a large head. That, for me at least, remains a vexatious question.

18.5 neck, size 8 head. Moderate spread work the best for me, and the original polo button down from BB works well too. I agree the straight point looks off on me.

This chap (Dmitry Medvedev) doesn't seem to have overly large a head, but still I think it's a pretty good question of how much different shirt collars helped him.

Notice the position of the collars on the neck.
