In my recent obsession with mitigating the shine that develops on elbows and seats (and ruins good garments prematurely) I began wondering what a blazer would look like with self fabric elbow patches. We've all seen tweedy jobs with leather elbow patches, but what about a more formal jacket with formal patches made from the same material as the rest of the jacket. When the patches get shiny they can be replaced or removed. Somehow I think this might look funny but I want to throw it out there...

If you have patches on the elbow, I'm sure it can no longer be a "formal" jacket. If you've got to put patches on the elbows, you may as well make them obvious instead of trying to hide them.

What? That's not what a patch blazer is? :icon_smile_wink:
It will be when we modify WNH's blazer, after all he was the one who thought it could be an interesting idea. It seems like the least he could do is donate a blazer to the cause and the rest of us can chip in on the tailoring.

I am in for five bucks, how about you?

Cheers, Jim.

I bought a moleskin wash and wear sportscoat a while back, which had oval elbow patches in the same material. It looked and felt bloody awful and I unpicked them.

Elbow patches were meant to reclaim favorite old tweed sports jackets that had worn through at the elbows. Today many jackets have patches as a "fashion' statement. I still laugh when I see a new jacket with elbow patches. Through the years I have put patches on old blazers for customers. This is fine if you have an old blazer that you want to relegate to "rainy day" use. It will no longer fill the bill as a dress blazer.

I believe I saw a photo on this board of a blazer with two different tartans as elbow patches and it looked fantastic! Certainly not as dressy as a new blazer, but perfect for a coctail party. I intend to do this once my blazer wears out. Of course, I'll buy a new blazer for standard use.
