Well, considering the political tone, I shall refrain from observing that's a marvelous opportunity to suggest being mutually less so!

Edit: Translation as filtered through the female psyche: "Hey guy, you're makin' me look bad! "

Unless you are wearing a tux to a baseball game, would say she is not only rude - but misinformed about the point of dressing. To satisfy yourself and show respect to those around you. Do what makes you happy my friend.

And she will experience no repercussions. Yet if you had said to her what she said to you, she'd be accusing you of creating a "hostile workplace." And your due process would fly out the door. You would be flayed, skewered, and roasted.

I'm sure that was said of me at times during my working life before retirement. It has also been said since I retired. Not that I dress so well now, but i do usually dress much better than those I encounter. Then again, nice khakis, OCBD's, good seaters and leather shoes ARE better items than many who I encounter on a day to day basis wear. I'm also guilty of usually being only one of maybe three who wear a jacket and tie to church these days.

Never underestimate the benefit of having a good seater. It takes a heck of a lot of time in the gym to get one, but it's totally worth it. Nothing equals the satisfaction of having a comely lass compliment your fine seater. Fishertw, I sure can't blame you for bragging about yours.

As someone who spends much of his time "ridiculously overdressed", I feel your pain, though I have long learned to ignore such comments. I dress ultimately for my own enjoyment, and for the enjoyment of like-minded people, some of whom actually post to this forum .

Can you tell us what were you wearing and where were you when she said this? It is possible to be overdressed but that would depend on the context.

Well the wife must think I have a fine seater, as she keeps telling me I'm a certifiable "hard-a**!" LOL.

I was just at work and wearing a suit like I do every day. I tend to agree with those who suspect that the issue is not so much that I am overdressed as it is so many others are underdressed.

Five years ago or so, I rolled my eyes (in my head) when someone said he liked to look nice all the time.

Now I bet many people roll their eyes when they see me.

So, a man is told he is "ridiculously overdressed" for wearing a business suit in a business office...

Apparently so, but then this is rural Indiana. Not that I see many others (outside of my firm's offices) wearing suits, but perhaps what I routinely wear that is bit different are suits with contrasting vests such as a black or navy suit with a grey vest. My Norwegian wife calls it the 1930's diplomat look. As simple as that is, it seems to be a look people around here associate with wealth and the upper classes. It's fine with me for them to think whatever they wish. I rather doubt I'll ever think of being accused of overdressing as anything but a compliment...

Out of curiosity, do you think you would have elicited the same comments had you eschewed the contrasting vests and merely been wearing a conventional two-piece business suit?

Should a woman tell you that you are 'ridiculously overdressed' you have every right to tell Human Resources that you feel that you are in a hostile environment and demand redress. Let the doxy stew in her own juices for a while!
