Recently my love for longwings was reawakened. I have been a longtime AE customer, but as has been documented many times on the boards here, I've seen some not-so-great QC come out of there recently. I wanted a new pair (ie not from dabondo on ebay, not like-new ebay, etc) and wanted something a little different from the typical colors.
I've also read the negative opinions of Florsheim on here. Over the years they've had several things that looked interesting (I still kick myself for not getting a pair of white Veblen longwings when they were out), but I always stayed away because of the image I had of them from comments on this and other sites.
When I started to search for longwings that were a little different, I googled something (don't remember what) and wound up on Florsheim's site, looking at their Heritage model. The color I liked was Sandstone, which looks like a natural color:
I found a 20% code online for Florsheim, which made these $144. (Code: LNKFLLC8)
It took about eight business days to get them. Here is the presentation when they arrived:
Shoe bags were included, although they're pretty flimsy, and I don't use shoe bags anyway. Still, a nice touch, given that AE is ditching shoe bags.
The shoes are finished very nicely, and a careful examination revealed no flaws in the leather or problems with construction or finish. This picture is not representative of the color, the photo on their web site is accurate.
Close-up on the brogueing on the toes:
Tagged as Horween leather. Whether a retro attempt or not, it's a nice touch.
The shoes are listed as "a flexible leather sole with a Goodyear welt construction" on the website. The soles have a coating on them, like lacquer or shellac, perhaps to allow them to use cheaper leather? Never seen that on a leather-soled shoe before.
Heels appear to be hand-nailed, not sure you'd make a machine do the nailing so unevenly. Heels are solid without being rock-hard like the old J&M heels were.
