Interesting article - thank you for posting.

A couple of recent WSJ articles leaning the other way, but of course, as your article noted, the "fashion" guys are supposed to be ahead of the curve.

The below articles are from a subscription site, but sometimes, if you Google your way there, they'll let you read an article or two.

First Article
"Wall Street, the last bastion of traditional corporate dress code, has been loosening its tie-and in some cases, getting rid of it completely-as male bankers increasingly take their sartorial cues from clients."

Second Article
Suits are out. Fleece vests and jeans are in. That is bad news for ,which owns the Men's Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank brands.

I have been saying it for about 3 years - but bankers just don't wear ties much anymore. I think attorneys are the next phase and are in transition.
I've been an attorney for darn near 13 years now. I have yet to work at a firm where ties are worn other than for court or client meetings.

Sport coats are still very common. Ties are rare.

I can't imagine an attorney going into court without a tie. And I wouldn't want to see the judge's reaction!
I went to court a couple weeks ago and could not believe what the judge was wearing. I don't even know how to describe what she was wearing, but it was casual whatever it was. My lawyer said that she likely wanted to be comfortable under her robe, but she wasn't wearing her robe when I was in court. Nevertheless, all of the male lawyers there were dressed in suits and ties and the female lawyers were wearing suits or tailored jackets. Since you never know what judge you'll get, you have to dress to please the most strict.

Dare I enquire as to what crime you had been accused of committing?

Had to hire a lawyer and he never even wore a sport coat. The initial consultation, I show up in the brown with light blue pinstripe DB and tie and tells me if we go to court, I can't out dress him. LOL

Then after all is settled over over a year, had a previous meeting so again wearing a suit, charcoal with grey pinstripe. Lawyer remarks I didn't need to wear a suit and before I could say anything, his secretary calls out "He always wears a suit!"

So yes, getting way too casual. I be happy for it as mean can occasionally find nice used suits for under $50. :p

Oh and I did post a video from Hugo discussing suits are coming back especially with the younger folks.

Yeah that I do not see happening ever, and have never seen. I've seen lawyers show up in court with an odd coat and trousers, but with a tie.

No tie? Yikes.

Personally, I wouldn't dream of showing up in court in anything but a dark suit, white shirt, black shoes, muted blue tie. It's the only way to guarantee you won't piss off the judge

I'm an attorney. I always wear a sport coat to client meetings, but I'm actually a bit more formal than the norm.

And.. An a day where I know I'll do nothing but sit in my office and write, I have no issue dressing casially, like a pair of chinos, ocbd, and sweater. Or even jeans (if a Friday).

He was an accident lawyer.

I know a trust lawyer that only wears a black t shirt and jeans. And being short, wide, and carrying more then a few extra, not flattering. Even if must wear t shirts, a casual sport coat I would think help.

What is your focus if you don't mind me asking?

If I were to try to guess at a consensus, it sounds as if a majority of attorneys only wear ties when meeting clients and when they go to court. I suspect that is a bit of an oversimplification but it speaks to my general sentiment that the tie is a dinosaur...even with suits - ugh...
