Just wondering if anyone could give me a little bit of advice.
I have got a pair of black casual shoes with black laces. They are sport inspired shoes i think, looking similar to a football boot.

I was just wondering when people replace worn laces do they ever get different colour laces from the original colour? Ive been looking at guys shoes of late as they walk past, and i noticed some people with black shoes and a coffee colour type lace and i can't help thinking they look very pleasing to my eyes.
What are peoples general thoughts regarding this? Do you always stick with black laces with black shoes? Also im torn between round laces or flat and do people know when it is best to have flat or round or is it just down to personal preference?

Some people just get whatever laces are available at their local store and from my experience, brown laces are available in more variety.

Laces for black shoes should be black. Smart black shoes without black laces look wrong.

Casual shoes/trainers could have different colour laces but even for black trainers I think they should be black. There be a case where the black trainers have white patterning and the laces are white, but that depends on the shoes.

Interesting. With black trainers i would say black laces as well. But mine are informal black shoes. It is a bit of a dilema really for me because ive always bought a new pair of shoes rather than buy laces.
But the guys shoes ive looked at had different colour laces- i think it was a coffee colour lace with black shoes, and they looked good. Im just not sure if they were the original laces that came with his shoes. I guess i will never know for sure. Ive also seen red laces quite a lot with black casual shoes, which i thought also looked good with jeans. But not as good as the coffee coloured looking laces with black shoes.

When he says coffee color I think he's thinking coffee with cream. This sounds good to me too. I have a pair of black w'tips that I sometimes wear in summer with white laces (sorry, Chats) and switch to green for fall.

Now, Vinny (may I call you, Vinny?), say this ain't so:

Hello,

From an article on the late, and very great, Bunny Roger:

"He enjoyed customising his footwear, famously adding red laces to black wholecuts to compliment his favourite ruby cufflinks".

Just to show that great sartorial brains have obviously considered this in the past!

Chris.

Vincent in my black Pumas I sometimes have Rasta laces: green, yellow and black (the pan-African colours) in tribute to Usain Bolt (sponsored by Puma), but also to Africa and reggae.

My retro Adidas SL 72 (which are all black, even the 3-stripes) have a green and yellow side sole, so rasta laces get worn in those sometimes as well.

In my dark blue Golas I have red laces.
And in my black Doctor Martens boots I sometimes wear yellow laces.

Also in the past, I've had black laces in brown country brogues and brown laces in black working shoes/boots.

I think changing laces is a good bit of fun and can challenge old fashioned ideas about what is and isn't acceptable.

You are right i mean coffee with cream coloured laces. Light brown in colour. Yes you can call me vinny that is no problem. Call me anything you want.

This has to be the cheapest fashion experiment around. Get a bunch of diff colored pairs and go for it!
Thats good to hear. I did just buy a brown pair of laces, and put them on my shoes. The shoes look much better now IMO. They were boring with the black laces.
But the replacement laces are only 90cm long, whereas the originals were 120cm approx. I knew i shouldnt trust the shopkeeper who asked how many eyelets have your shoes got? I should have took the laces off my shoes for her.
Bit too short my new laces and i cant use all of the eyelets.

Earl of OrmondeYes it is a bit of fun mixing it up a little. I cant understand why i was so worried in the first place now. My shoes with the brown laces look more interesting now.

I happily wear pale blue/grey with black formal shoes at work. Never had a problem with it and it brightens them up a bit. Don't be frightened to enjoy yourself.
Thanks. I wont be scared now. Although ive just bought some brown laces for my shoes. Im already planning my next visit to the shoes shops to see what colour laces they have for me to potentially purchase.

If you're interested in photos of various shoe and lace combinations, take a look at the images Get Smart posts of his looks over in the Streetwear and Denim forum at Style Forum and also at Modculture. He does a lot of this.

I change the dark brown laces on my chocolate suede derbies to a lighter tan in the warmer months. Probably not the most exciting change since some already come like that.
