I thrifted a southwick navy blazer a couple of months ago and it’s been everything I could ask for and more especially after I got it tailored to fit me. However with the summer approaching, I was thinking of having the lining either removed or changed to a butterfly lining so that it would be more comfortable in this oppressive heat. I’m currently in a college town, so I would have to mail it to a tailor, do you guys have recommendations?

The only things I can think of, other than having a tailor, or a seamstress, remove it professionally or find a sharp knife and do it yourself. Don't know any magical incantations for removing jacket lining.

Well, lining change or removal is one of the more advanced tailoring moves out there, so no surprise that many tailors won't go near it. You can easily cut out the lining yourself, but be prepared to deal with all the unfinished edges that if left untreated, will in time unravel and undermine the coat.

The o.p. should be grateful he managed to get (1) a Southwick blazer (2) that fits and (3) which cost him almost nothing. Don't f*** around with it, just wear it as is and be grateful. I've NEVER found anything like that thrifting. You don't improve it. I'm sure those tailors felt a bit sad inside when the o.p. brought in a Southwick blazer, which are among the best money can buy, and asked that they start chopping it up.

+1 on leaving it alone.

I would find another jacket that suits your needs for the hot weather instead. If you're not an odd size, you can probably find a 1/2'' lined Haspel seersucker jacket for not too much money if you look around.

Converting a fully lined blazer to a 1/2'' lined one is a tall order. Not only will the lining need to be removed, but all the seams will need to be redone. That's an expensive job and one not worth dealing with on a thrifted jacket.
