Hello all,

Whenever I go into a store to buy myself some new shoes, I inevitably spend an inordinate amount of time contemplating the beautiful and elegant looking red suede slippers that the shop may have displayed. I, shy away, however, every time from making such a commitment, harboring the fear that no matter what I would wear them with, the effect would be too ostentatious, although, perhaps that may be the point of red slippers (I truly don't know).

What do they go well with, or are they best suited for a traditional Pope?

Depends upon the slipper/loafer, and what you would wish to wear them with.

First, if by slipper, you mean bedroom slipper, pretty much anything goes! (Though I personally draw the line at fuzzy bunnies. )

As to the balance, the particular shade of red (Burgundy or Fire Engine Red. pr something in between?) and how they're styled, make a huge difference. If they're a dark wine color, and a fairly formal style, you can wear them pretty much as any other similarly styled shoe. But if they're brightly colored, IMHO they're best confined to more exuberant sportswear, and should be casually styled. Plus, you need to be the kind of guy who feels comfortable with such style.

Excellent, thanks! Jeans seem to be the logical choice here, do they go well with any other sort of trouser in your experience?

That's a very attractive shape but I would have to be about forty years younger and still in the present era to consider them in that color. Now if, as Brother Flanderian suggested, they were in burgundy, I could probably be convinced--for use in a casual setting. Jeans, yes. Long-sleeved OCBD with the sleeves rolled up? Yes. Casual vest? Perhaps. Panama hat? Oh, yes!

Buy them and wear them if you dare, but for me, when you do so, I will maintain a 'lightening strike' safe distance between myself and anyone wearing such footwear. A vengeful god, thinking you are mocking his man in the Vatican with your choice of footwear may be looking for some payback! LOL. Stick with burgundy.

Lol, fair enough, as a trad Catholic myself, this was a primary concern! I shall leave the red for the bishop in white, and stick with the burgundy :beer:

I have red and brick red, suede both, in Weston 180 and various Carmina loafers. Compliments every time. Somehow suede softens the color impact greatly. Brick red in particular is versatile.

Interesting, what colors of coat do you find suits them best?

They are good coat or no coat, shorts or trousers. Definitely more informal. For coat, linen or Navy or madras if the color theme hits.

For me the sartorial concern is that something bright red draws attention, and in this case to your feet. The general concept is to wear clothing that draws attention to your face, not your feet. Maybe you have great calves?!

I do not. As I say, suede softens the whole affair and brick red really does not draw special attention. Bright calf is a whole other thing
