Jeans, on their own pure physical characteristics, are simply awful pants. They don't hang at all, the gather and bunch at the worst spots, they are hot when it's dry out, and cold when it's wet. They hold odors and dirt like crazy.
Agree about the hot part. But thats true of any heavy twill cotton pants. While you can purchase 8 oz denim, I think thats just silly. Just wear shorts. I suppose your right about the cold when wet, but again, the same is true of any cotton pant. I doubt wool pants are much better, except that they would dry out quicker. I must ask why the hell your so wet though. FTR when I lived in Oregon, I lived off of jeans. They kept me warm during the miserable cloudy and abysmally wet weather. In fact, they were almost essential casual clothes. Didn't wear suits or wool pants back then, but jeans most certainly did the job.

Your argument about hanging is premised on the assumption that drape and hang is necessary for good pants. This view is not universal. And to your final point, like all cotton clothing, your supposed to wash them after wearing... Whether people do or don't shouldn't be held against the jeans themselves, but against the smelly hippies/hipsters who refuse to wear clean clothes.

Actually, one of the wonderful features of wool is that unlike most other fabrics, it continues to insulate even when wet.

Orvis actually makes a nice looking denim pant (pleated/plain front). Gentleman's fit & washed enough to go with blazer/tweed/corduory jacket.
Jeans cut to hide the fact that Papaw is wearing Depends!

It's been awhile since I have worn jeans, but I used to like Paper Cloth & Denim brand.

IMO, the blazer/SC w/ jeans combo is way overdone. It was a trendy look about 4-5 years ago but those days are long gone. A pair of dress pants looks infinity better.

I noticed someone said Citizens for Humanity -- I have a pair that are incredibly comfortable (scarcely feel like denim) and great fitting; they have a dark wash and mine at least have subdued pocket stitching. I tried on a ton of the brands someone else mentioned here, and these were the most comfortable by far.

I have to agree with the statement that a navy blazer and blue jeans isn't going to work. If you absolutely have to wear jeans, go for a sport coat with some fall colors like brown, rust, steel gray etc. I also agree with a few other posts about trading in the jeans for a pair of khakis or a some gray flannel trousers. It's very easy to dress apart from the herd without being obvious.

Guys have been wearing blazers/sport coats with jeans for decades. I was regularly wearing this over 30 years ago as shown in this old picture.

I picked up this combo from seeing Robert Redford wear it in the 1975 film Three Days of the Condor.

Heck, for all I know it started a decade before that with Jed Clampett.

Of course a pair of dress pants looks better in a situation that calls for dress pants; however, not every situation calls for a pair of dress pants. I don't think anyone is suggesting, at least I'm not, that one should put on a pair of jeans to attend a high level business meeting or attend a funeral, wedding, etc.; but jeans with a blazer/sport coat can look both appropriate and stylish at many casual social functions. It's just an added plus that many women love men in neat, clean, well fitting jeans. It also helps if you are Robert Redford or Hugh Laurie. :icon_smile_big:

Look, the bottom line is that you can get through life just fine without ever wearing jeans and you can get through life equally well wearing them all of your life. If you don't like them, don't wear them. They are just pants.

I am programming a function key to print the phrase HUH? when struck and I will use this exclusively when responding to Cuff Daddy whose devolution from go-to to run-from is somewhat sad to read.
While your disappointment fills me with no end of personal anguish, I'll just have to soldier on.
HUH? (It works!)

You have been pounded quite heavily in this thread and I believe correctly so. You couldn't just say you don't like jeans and leave it at that? As an attorney (you) I realize defense is the drug of choice, hopefully concocted with facts and reason. But when those two things are absent it's typical of your profession to just make them up. Levi Strauss and I believe you're doing that here.

Very well said, Cruiser.
I try to avoid the jeans with sportcoat/blazer look. However, I came across this light brown suede sportcoat, and it wouldn't look good with anything but jeans. So, there you go.

whats the age range of you people? I'm 43, fashion forward but admittedly out of the loop with all the denim choices out there these days.

I thought i felt old, but you people sound like fossils with your answers. What's next, using my deceased grandmas term, "Dungarees"? LOL

This is for a high school reunion, in a casual setting. Most people will be wearing jeans with a button down long sleeved shirt. I thought I would dress it up a little with a blue blazer.

you know, in this realm of look, as shown by Tom Brady.. https://www.askmen.com/fashion/style_icon/4_style_icon.html
Ha, ha - it is amazing that the same demin/jean haters pop up decrying wearing of same every time anyone brings up the topic. It reminds me of a guy I worked for in the '80s who was talking about how in his college days he only had on khaki's at a function and was embarrased because he was too dressed down, blah blah. I happened to be wearing a tweed coat, ocbd, club tie, cordovans and ......khaki's (teaching at a business school). He then looked me over and ??? Probably wanted to fire me.
Anyway, I'm with you on your reasoning - plenty of time, if we live long enough, to get into old coot mode.

I am not saying the jeans with a jacket combo was created in the last ten years. However, as far as being a trendy thing that is now past its time, I am speaking specifically to the younger set who frequent bars/ clubs/ lounges, etc. (many of whom were not alive in 1975.)

Jed Clampett was not mingling in the NYC or Chicago bar scene in the early to mid-2000's. The folks who were often sported the jacket with jeans to set them apart from the normal throng of untucked striped shirts.

IMO and IME experience, if you are wearing a jacket to dress up jeans, you are better off wearing dress pants.

We're theoretically just talking about jeans on guys right? Because the right jeans on the right woman would get no argument from any of you I imagine!:aportnoy:

While I certainly respect your opinion, since I semi-retired a few years ago I can count on my fingers the number of times that I wear dress pants (or a tie for that matter) in a year; however, I wear my sport coats and blazers all the time. I wear them with jeans and with khakis as a substitute for a lightweight jacket. I wear them with all types of shirts from polos to point collar dress shirts. The fact is that I really like wearing sport coats and blazers, and see no reason to not wear them just because I'm not wearing dress pants.

Having said that, I don't try to substitute jeans and a blazer/sport coat for more business like attire in those situations where business attire is called for.

+1000

Jeans are a bit overdone these days and I'm trying to cut down on them... which isn't easy with my job's new, "relaxed" dress code. I've seen jeans at funerals for ****'s sake! However, I refuse to let go of my opinion that women can look quite sexy in them. Just look around any public place. Case closed, as far as I'm concerned.

Icons like Robert Redford and James Dean are proof that the right jeans work for the right men as well, even knowing the decades their films are from.

I've found Dunhill dark rinse jeans to be a good 'dressy' option, although they are pricey and not sure about availability in USA. The most important thing is the fit, and I'd recommend undistressed dark blue/indigo rinse. Whether you go Lee, Levis, Gap, Diesel is far less important than a good dark rinse and the right fit, so you would be better off trying on a few pairs and seeing what works for you. With a good belt it should provide enough contrast with your blazer not to be confused as some sort of weird 'suit'.

Not sure about black capped oxfords with jeans though, even 'dressy jeans'. Have you got any brogues or something a bit less formal than the black oxford?

^^
Doggone it Cruiser, you had me until you typed "a well fitting pair of dark Lee jeans." Change Lee to Levi 501's and I'll give you a +1! ;)
Its a rare day that I disagree with Cruiser, but I have to second the Levi 501's. Levis are the only jeans - everything else is just denim pants.

See I immediately get a chance to make up for disagreeing with him about Lee vs Levi - for many many situations, jeans are MORE appropriate than dress pants, or slacks. And they look great with a blazer or sports coat as long as neither is too fussy.
