I've tried a few different brands of socks over the years and my favorite for a long time were the Gold Toe Windsor OTC Merino blend socks. However, I am not happy with the current quality (which has gone downhill over the years) as the last package I bought had one decent pair out the three. The other two fell apart after one wash and wear.

Recently I decided to try Boardroom Socks, as this brand gets good reviews, but these only seem marginally better. After one wear, the threads around the elastic top are coming loose. These socks are also skimpier than the old Gold Toe Windsors and seem to be made for people with skinny legs and no calf muscles.

Years ago I tried some Pantherella socks but was unimpressed with the weak elastic. I don't know if they are better now or not. So I'm not sure what to try next. Maybe some of the BB OTC options or possibly Allen Edmonds' socks. I don't mind spending up to $30 a pair if the quality is good. That means strong elastic and durable stitching, and made for people that don't have stick legs.

Does anyone have a good recommendation? I strongly prefer merino wool because it wicks moisture better IME. Not interested in mid-calf socks either.

Thanks.

I have a few from Brooks Brothers that have work quite well. If you have a Neumann Marcus last call near you, check that out too. Otherwise, I usually wait for the sales and stock up.

For more casual options, check out Smartwool.

If you don’t want to spend a lot try try the ones from B.B. when they’re on sale (which is basically always these days). The one size fits all socks are decent but are a little thicker than I prefer. They have sized ones that are a bit more expensive but are thinner. The wool/nylon content has gotten worse over the years but you may not care.

Nordstrom’s merino-and-nylon blend socks are three for $35, while Brooks are $24.50 each.

I’ve found that it’s akmost like a wool sock is woven into a nylon one, which means that as they wear the nylon knitting remains for a while before an actual hole appears.

I too am frustrated by the OTC offerings as of late. I have oversized calves and anything but OTC drives me bat in the belfry crazy. Many OTC simply shrivel at the top. And the they descend to mid-calf range I've yet to find an appropriate adjective for my displeasure. I also have bad feet that are perpetually cold. So, I often resort to a thin OTC with a thick wool "hiking type" of sock over it. I'd love to combine the two functions. I'm expecting a pair of Darn Tough in a day or so. Hopefully, they'll fit the bill.

Does Darn Tough make a sock thin enough to fit into a dress shoe?

There are some OTC Merino Socks recommendations in the following thread that you may want to consider.

https://askandyaboutclothes.com/community/threads/over-the-calf-merino-wool-dress-socks.236950/

I also noticed a past recommendation for Viccel Socks, and it looks like they do make some nice looking OTC wool socks

While I have not tried these either, the two additional brands below seem to be making good quality socks, each having one or more OTC wool socks offerings.

An understated bargain; Lands End merino wool over-the-calf socks, you can always get them for $25 for 2 pr, occasionally you can get the 40% off a single item (repeatedly) and knock the price way down

Basic colors, no fancy striping or argyle - but well worth it

Bresciani and Mazarin from Mes Chaussettes Rouge. The first few pairs I bought there in early 2015 are just now being put out to pasture as weekend socks. Palatino from Olof1982 are excellent also. I have legs like tree trunks and all of the above brands fit me very comfortably.
I have 4 pairs of Gammarelli socks from them on the way now. Wonderful selection of colors., available in 100% cotton or merino wool. VAT comes off in checkout... roughly €16 a pair. I, too, have been unimpressed with Boardroom, but they're better than Gold Toe's Best.

I hate to put down products, but I have to say the Viccel socks I tried were not impressive at all. I wasn't impressed with fabric quality (very shiny) nor the fact that literally half the OTC sock was ribbing to attempt to keep the sock from sliding down. After a couple wears I donated them.
