New here, so I ask the following tentatively – I’ve done a few forum searches, and can’t find anything that quite answers this.
I’ve been looking to find some good quality and nicely-cut chinos for a while now. I’ve tried lots of options I’m unhappy with, and the most interesting looking prospects from higher-end companies (mostly Japanese repro brands and small boutique western brands) cost more than I’m looking to spend, so something of a last resort.
I have settled on the idea of trying a variety of old Ralph Lauren models second-hand, as they’re cheap and plentiful on eBay etc. I’ve tended to have good experiences with any older (mostly 90s/early 2000s) Ralph Lauren garments I’ve bought, so I’m hoping the quality to used-price ratio will be quite good here.
Looking at the old models on eBay (etc.) I see lots of model names (which will prove useful), but alas no one good source of information online explaining how these models compared and differed, the eras they were made, so on and so forth.
I wondered firstly if anyone here knew of a resource like this? In the event that there simply isn’t one, I would love to ask those here with knowledge/experience of these models for their advice.
I’m open to various styles, but am generally drawn to the wider fitting and higher-rise models. I’d like to be able to wear them both casually with (let’s say) a summer shirt untucked, and more traditionally with a tucked shirt for a casual tailoring + chinos look. Therefore I do like at least a mid-rise. I’m open to both flat fronts and pleats, but have been looking at pleated models the most lately.
Among the pleated models I come across are the Hammond Pant, Andrew Pant, Ethan Pant. I notice differences in detailing (cuffs or no, forward or reverse pleats, I think) but aside from the obvious I have no idea how they fit, when they were made, just generally what to make of the differences etc. If anyone could help me understand what I’m looking at, I’d be most grateful.
