Greetings Gentelmen,

I was at a thrift store over the weekend, and found a grey wool vest that appears to be orphaned from a suit. The shade of grey doesn't match anything I own, but at $4, I went ahead a bought it. Now I'm wondering how to wear it. My instict says that I shouldn't wear it with one of my grey suits. Perhaps with a navy suit? With charcol pants, a black blazer, white shirt and silver/white striped tie? Any suggestions?

Jeans. I would avoid the navy suit.

I agree with the previous posts. Utilize it for casual wear only and don't try to pair it with a suit of any color or pattern. A v-neck sweater will look much better with a suit than an orphaned vest.

I don't see why it couldn't be worn as is with a navy suit.

Agreed- depending on the material.

I bought two suits a few years ago in a very similar material. One is mid gray and the other a steel blue (You might calli t navy but it's a little lighter).

My tailor encourged me to try treating them as separates. It just so happens I'm wearing the blue trou with the gray coat today. But by far the best look is the gray vest with the blue suit.

I woldn't be doing it if the suit was, say, a 150's silk/wool and the vest was flannel, for example.

Thanks for the responses so far. Maybe I should have been clearer: whenI bought the vest the intention was to use it as an odd vest. I'm sorry I don't have a picture - but the color is a mid-grey with a very subtle herringbone weave.

I'm just looking for outfit ideas that are more on the every-day-at-the-office side of the spectrum. I usually wear a tie and jacket, and the occasional suit. I have a pretty versatile wardrobe.

Does that help your congregational satoral imaginations? :icon_smile_big:

Choralmaster,

Changing the buttons or not is up to you, but I'd do it so the vest could be worn more casually. I would not wear it with a suit - not under any circumstances - but as an odd vest with nice dark jeans and button down shirt, it would be great. Certainly could be used under a more casual odd jacket, like an unconstructed corduroy.
