General sizes (S, M, L) are a way to reduce the number of different sizes a manufacturer needs to make (compare to 38, 40, 42, 44, etc). Usually a M will work for about a 40, but measure from underarm to underarm while the coat is buttoned and spread out. Take the number you get, multiply by 2 then subtract 6. That should give you a ballpark of number size.
