What kind of tie would go with this kind of shirt? A dark, solid green?

With a suit you go more conservative and go for plain or light stripes, with a light tie. Or go for the Etro/Duchamp style with a dark suit with bold chalk-stripes and a loud tie.

I do not think the shirt colour is as big of an issue, as you think. I have a similar shirt but with slightly thicker maroon lines - normally worn with navy suit, navy tie (pattern but the navy shades are very similar) with dark brown shoes.

If I had that shirt - grey suit, plain or pattern tie (not diagonal) with black or brown shoes depending on the tie. With a pattern tie I would go for something like a Hermes tie.

The shirt cut and fabric are handsome, not too loud. But the non-matched collar points would sadly me it a non-starter for me.

Dark green, pale yellow, gray, tan and brown are all possibilities for ties.

Hmm, that's interesting. See there's something else I never even would have thought of! So by non-matching, you mean the checked pattern is different at the end of each collar point, right?

I always thought of pattern matching as the pattern matching between the body of the shirt and yoke, and at the side seams. Hadn't even thought about the collar ends.

Depending on the suit being worn with the shirt and tie, a plain navy, or navy with less assertive pattern tie is what I'd choose. I have a navy tie from BB with silver dots - dots are 1/4 inch in diameter, and are fairly widely spaced - which works with my patterned purple shirts.

I like graph checks, and like your shirt - best of luck and have fun co-ordinating a tie to it!

I would go with a dark colored wool knit tie myself, maybe navy. Its a bit fun/less formal of a shirt so a bit of a less formal tie like a wool knit maybe would be good.

I really like wool ties, they have interesting texture you don't see on silk ties.

I've got a similar shirt. I wear dark blue, dark blue pin dot, purple (different hue from the shirt), green, and even an orange tie with it. I don't own a yellow tie that would work with the pattern or I'd wear that in spring as well.

The navy ties work best in most business settings and I save the louder combinations for Fridays.

I would wear a medium or dark purple/mauve/lilac solid tie, perhaps with a bit of texture to it.

One trick I like for matching ties is to find a tie you like that has the shirt color in it as a color. If the combination looks good on the tie by itself, it will look good with the shirt, too. Just make sure the pattern is a different scale than the shirt. Example:

Yes. And non-matched collar points or plackets really bother me. I suspect it's harder to match a check, but I won't buy a shirt with this issue as it gives the whole collar an off look for me. I've seen some patterns that don't repeat in a small enough distance to match, but that's rare.

I don't know that I'd wear that purple striped tie with that shirt...the hues are too close and for some reason that seems like it would come off looking like you bought a department store manikin look. Vary the hue of purple in the tie from the shirt if you're going to match colors. My preference would be for darker...a deep violet, if you're going to use purple.

It is a nice looking tie, though. And I'd wear it with the same shirt in a blue check!

Just my opinion but I would avoid a geometric pattern. The shirt is geometric and if the tie were too it would be too confusing. A solid or perhaps floral or paisley would be nice.

I would think, purple, navy, green, even some reds. You could also do some pinks.

Make sure the pattern on the tie is different scale than the shirt though.

Oh ok, I think I see what you mean. So you're suggesting finding a tie with purple in it, and then wearing that tie with the shirt, right?

What I've done, is look for ties with one of their colors being purple just in order to see what other color(s) the manufacturer has paired the purple with. So that's a trick to see what color compliments purple. Then I can go get a tie with no purple, but with the purple-compliment color seen in the tie. Know what I mean?
