While C&J makes a very nice shoe, their prices have gotten to a point where I'd not consider them. But for any who love the make anyway, a bit of a break -
So you'll be writing Lewiston on the label. It's a mostly French town (departed Quebecois), but here we pronounce it Loy'stn because we're enunciatingly dumb.I've two pair of Rancourt's shoes I'm packing up to mail off to Rancourt for resoling, even as I sit typing this post.
I admire your fortitude! 👍I've two pair of Rancourt's shoes I'm packing up to mail off to Rancourt for resoling, even as I sit typing this post. That's going to be the closest I come to buying myself a new pair for the next couple of years....at least. I'm finally making some real progress in reducing the hoard! LOL.![]()
Pediwear sells Crocket and Jones shoes and boots at far better prices than Ben Silver. They are also a reputable retailer and offer excellent service. If you like C & J, please take a look at the Pediwear website! The link was interesting. This selection reminds me of Church's circa 1980. The only other place I see their shoes is in Ben Silver catalogs where they are often hard to distinguish from Alden other than the roughly two hundred dollar premium for C&J. I already find Alden at the high end of my pain threshold and shopped the seconds when I needed shoes.
Did C&J make Peal shoes for Brooks Brothers in the 1980s?
I like them, but being a 72 year old with three relatively new pairs of Aldens and one pair of Quoddys, I feel shod for life except for athletic shoes.Pediwear sells Crocket and Jones shoes and boots at far better prices than Ben Silver. Also, I find it sad that Ben Silver keeps sending me catalogs, presumably because I bought two bow ties on sale.
I've shopped in Ben Silver on and off since I discovered their ties, when I arrived for a meeting in Charleston and had forgotten ties, in 1989 when they, for a short time, had a small store in what is now the Charleston Place Hotel. They sold ties only ties and blazers there as I recall. I've bought a few things over the years full price but mostly sale items and do wear their glasses frames and have for about 25 years. They are pricey but often the goods are not found in many other places. With the decreasing number of old line mens stores which have not gone the way of Brooks etc. I try to buy when I need things from them and from Hunter and Coggins in Asheville NC. Good stuff does seem to last, however.I understand!
Ben Silver's pricing is typically so much more than other retailers that I never even consider shopping there (I did stop by in person just to experience the store in Charleston). Sale items - if you can find your size and style - can be more reasonable options.
Some excellent points, Tom. I was focusing not on the unique stuff, but things readily available elsewhere. For instance, Ben Silver charges $645 and $840 for the Crockett & Jones Chiltern and Belgrave, respectively. At Pediwear, these models are $450 and $680.I've shopped in Ben Silver on and off since I discovered their ties, when I arrived for a meeting in Charleston and had forgotten ties, in 1989 when they, for a short time, had a small store in what is now the Charleston Place Hotel. Done!@Flanderian - Could you post this in the Deal/Steals board as well please![]()
Alden builds about as solid a shoe as exists. Other than obvious differences such as lasts and styles, the greatest difference I've found is in finishing and details. English shoes tend to be much more finely finished and detailed then U.S. made shoes, even Alden. The link was interesting. This selection reminds me of Church's circa 1980. Ben Silver has very nice things. They charge a bit more than I think they should, but you're right, if you don't do business with them, we'll loose them.I've shopped in Ben Silver on and off since I discovered their ties, when I arrived for a meeting in Charleston and had forgotten ties, in 1989 when they, for a short time, had a small store in what is now the Charleston Place Hotel.
