I've two pair of Rancourt's shoes I'm packing up to mail off to Rancourt for resoling, even as I sit typing this post. That's going to be the closest I come to buying myself a new pair for the next couple of years....at least. I'm finally making some real progress in reducing the hoard! LOL. ;)

The link was interesting. This selection reminds me of Church's circa 1980. The only other place I see their shoes is in Ben Silver catalogs where they are often hard to distinguish from Alden other than the roughly two hundred dollar premium for C&J. I already find Alden at the high end of my pain threshold and shopped the seconds when I needed shoes.

Did C&J make Peal shoes for Brooks Brothers in the 1980s?

Pediwear sells Crocket and Jones shoes and boots at far better prices than Ben Silver. They are also a reputable retailer and offer excellent service. If you like C & J, please take a look at the Pediwear website!

I like them, but being a 72 year old with three relatively new pairs of Aldens and one pair of Quoddys, I feel shod for life except for athletic shoes.

Also, I find it sad that Ben Silver keeps sending me catalogs, presumably because I bought two bow ties on sale.

I understand!

Ben Silver's pricing is typically so much more than other retailers that I never even consider shopping there (I did stop by in person just to experience the store in Charleston). Sale items - if you can find your size and style - can be more reasonable options.

I've shopped in Ben Silver on and off since I discovered their ties, when I arrived for a meeting in Charleston and had forgotten ties, in 1989 when they, for a short time, had a small store in what is now the Charleston Place Hotel. They sold ties only ties and blazers there as I recall. I've bought a few things over the years full price but mostly sale items and do wear their glasses frames and have for about 25 years. They are pricey but often the goods are not found in many other places. With the decreasing number of old line mens stores which have not gone the way of Brooks etc. I try to buy when I need things from them and from Hunter and Coggins in Asheville NC. Good stuff does seem to last, however.

Some excellent points, Tom. I was focusing not on the unique stuff, but things readily available elsewhere. For instance, Ben Silver charges $645 and $840 for the Crockett & Jones Chiltern and Belgrave, respectively. At Pediwear, these models are $450 and $680.

I agree, always good to support small classic retailers...and Charleston is a wonderful city!

Eagle,
After about six years of chasing shoes, buying and giving away probably 3-4K worth in the process, I have finally narrowed down to about ten pair of shoes including 5 AE, two Gokey, three Sam Hubbard a pair of Dubarry chelsea boots and a recent purchase of Russell Moccasin penny loafers that are about as close to an original Bass Weejun as anything I have had since the 70's,. plus athletic and hiking shoes. All had to have replacable footbeds or at least deep volume in both the heel and forefoot areas to allow for full foot orthotics. I gave away or sold 5 or 6 Alden, several Sperry a pair of RM Williams Chelseas and others. Turnover has been significant, but as you say, now I am fully shod until they carry me out of here.
It's been a chase but I've REPLACED the hoard. !

Alden builds about as solid a shoe as exists. Other than obvious differences such as lasts and styles, the greatest difference I've found is in finishing and details. English shoes tend to be much more finely finished and detailed then U.S. made shoes, even Alden.

As you know, Peal is simply a brand name owned by Brooks, and over the years they've sold shoes so branded from a variety of makers. I've read Church among them, and have identified Loake, Cheaney, and Alfred Sargent so branded, though I doubt that's an inclusive list. I don't know if they ever rebranded (Private label) C&J shoes.

Markets make prices. C&J has always been in the perceived upper echelon of English makes, and has been priced accordingly. They tend to slot the pricing of their shoes a bit below E&G, and as E&G's pricing has risen dramatically, so has C&J's. And to my eye, they're both beautifully made footwear of superb materials. But while I often prefer English shoes, peasant that I am, I find other English, and other European makes that please me for less than 1/2 what C&J is now asking. And they're also very fine shoes.

Ben Silver has very nice things. They charge a bit more than I think they should, but you're right, if you don't do business with them, we'll loose them.
