I was thinking about getting a suit made, and having no buttons on the cuffs. Or maybe just one. I can't see that they serve any purpose, except possibly to add a bit of weight to keep the sleeve hanging properly, and that could be done with something else. I once had a much-loved linen coat with no buttons, and it probably did wrinkle more than coats with buttons, but this could be solved by steaming and pressing.

I remember reading in a trivia book that the origin of cuff buttons was in Frederick the Great's army - he saw that his soldiers were wiping their noses on the sleeves of their uniform coats, and so ordered that they have buttons on their sleeves to stop this. I have no idea if it's true or not. If it is, well, I don't wipe my nose on my sleeve. And anyway, if I did, then I could get my tailor to put absorbent cloth at the cuff to accomodate this.

So, is anyone with me, or will I be subject to ridicule if I go buttonless?
