Having used a London tailor for a while, I'm going made to measure on this with a local tailor who specialises in m2m. He will also make bespoke garments, but I want to give m2m a chance for a change.

I am considering the following:

DB, double vented, in grey herringbone (will work well with jeans).

Either 6x2 with peak lapel or 4x1 with fishmouth lapel

I am 5-10 and of slim build.

Eddie Murphy in 4x1 (but with notch lapel)

I'm not sure what a fishmouth lapel is, although as this is a double breasted sports coat my choice would be for a 4x2 with a peak lapel. Eddie Murphy's suit screams 1980's.

Anyone else agree? 4x2 since it is an odd jacket?

I didn't give much reasoning for my response, but I prefer 6x2 for suits. I think 4 buttons look better for sports coats and dinner jackets. The Duke of Kent is known for his 4x2 coats buttoned like a 4x1, although no one seems to mention that his suits were in fact 4x2. And the popularity of 4x1 suits in the 80's makes me despise them.

I'm not a fan. Especially if you plan to wear it with jeans. Just not my bag.

I've a newish DB (suit) in 4x2 notch (with trim lapels). Having said that, doing over again I'd probably go peak. And yeah, probably 4x2 as an odd jacket. Not sure about that material however.

What do you suggest then? It has to be grey/gray, I wear jeans & jacket a lot for work and I seek some variation among my tweedy jackets.

If not herringbone, what? Grey POW check?

fish mouth is when the top and bottom of a square notch is pinched half closed.
murphy's notch lapel on a db only looks good on a uniform.

Well, some men including my father even wear a DB blazer with jeans occasionally. I'd have said that an odd patterned DB jacket is more acceptable still.
