Okay, so I really wanted a pair of penny loafers to have in my closet because I am in college and I think they are perfect to have for when you go to a slightly nicer college event to just throw on with with an ocbd and a sweater. I got some Cole Haan pinch pennies, and the sizing was crazy! I normally wear an 8 but with an 8 the moment I planted my foot the heel would pop off like flip-flops. 7.5 did the same thing. The only thing that worked was a 7 with inserts put in. Is this normal with loafers? I figure you want them pretty snug to accommodate for stretch and breaking in.

For some, including me, this is normal. The problem, in my case, is a somewhat wide foot and narrow heels. Searching for penny loafers that fit has been a lifelong hobby.

I'm guessing you were shopping in a store with only medium widths available?

I don't actually size down in length, but I go from a EEE in oxfords to a E in loafers from Allen Edmonds. YMMV.

Yep. Pennies (and presumably other loafers) are very hard to fit -- for me, anyway. Wide feet, comparatively narrow heels.

I had to get mine a half a size smaller than I typically wear, a 8.5 instead of a 9. They fit good but I dont wear them that often as they seem to make my feet look really small.

I also have wide feet and narrow heels. I have a pair of AE loafers that don't fit very well, and I just ordered a pair of Sebagos to see what they are like.

Are you saying that my quest is probably futile? Do you have any specific observations to share? Have you tried these?

Since they are semi-custom I wondered if they would be a better fit.

Do you have any loafers that fit, or have you just gone completely to lace-up shoes?

In my limited experience, it's a good idea to buy a snug fitting loafer. It will loosen up with wear and conform to your foot as it breaks in -- just a few days.
