I hesitated to reply as I am completely biased.

I have never seen anyone in patent loafers with no socks. Even Don Johnson's character on Maimi Vice wore men's espadrilles or woven loafers,....

I would rather not imagine the sweaty mess one's feet would be in patent shoes without socks.

If you must move ahead without socks then follow this lead:

Good luck.

Show us some pics of the types of outfits you are looking at. And the types of loafers. I am not a big fan of patent leather in general as I find it shiny with a weird plasticky look. Now shell Cordivan loafers...

I have never seen or considered sockless opera pumps. For reasons that elude me, velvet slippers have been adopted for outdoor wear. I once attended a daytime wedding where the groom wore velvet slippers, sockless, and wore a black dinner suit, cut tight and showing plenty of ankles. Such footwear belongs in your house on a cold evening.

It's really a matter of personal preference, but I think that patent loafers can be a great addition to almost any outfit. They look especially stylish when paired with trousers, shorts or rolled-up jeans. Wearing them without socks is also an option if you don't mind the extra bit of attention this look might attract. Ultimately, it's all about having fun with your style and expressing yourself through fashion!

Who is “we”, and what bona fides do you have for offering (apparently quite poor) fashion advice?

Ummm...no. Bass Weejuns are plasticky pieces of garbage - lots of other options that can be worn without socks. None of them patent.
I wear a pair of Rancourt camp mocs, a pair of Quoddy Maliseets, and a pair of Leather Man flipflops sockless. Wearing them any other way would feel odd. Anything dressier involves socks. Anything dressier than LHS rates dark, solid color socks for me. I gave up the discomfort of patent ages ago, but to me patent demands thin black socks and a dinner suit, the combination only being worn after six. I do not own a pair, but Belgian loafers would look good sockless.
