Passport cover

I thought I'd put this one here before, but it disappeared...

I finally got a passport. I want a nice passport cover, but the one that matches my briefcase is $450 and rather blah. I bought and returned one from Cartier that was $225, because I just didn't like the metal trim detail - seemed like it could snag on a pocket, and rummaging for something in a coat pocket in front of a border guard is never a good idea.

I think I've decided on this one:

But I'm not sure about the crest. I prefer the silver to the gold, because it looks more like something from the 1960s, when people wore suits to fly Pan Am and got hot meals that were at least as good as the Horn & Hardart.

My one paranoid thought is that it advertises that I'm an American. I don't intend to travel to any war zones, but is it just foolish for me to be concerned about attracting the attention of people who would be inclined to harrass Americans because of their disagreement with our government's policies?

Wallet cover to neck wallet

What neck wallet could you recommend?

PS: Smythson Eagle Emblem, etc. - Anyone who travels in even a small "safe" part of Europe can observe reasons why discretion about US passports is doubtlessly advisable; furthermore, even Europeans behave most discretely about their own identification documents.

I have to disagree with this. As someone who has travleed extensively in Europe and stood in countless passport lines I have rarely seen Europeans have passport covers. And the fact that European passports come in all different colors, one can with a good degree of accuracy determine where someone hails from.

That's not my experience at all. When standing in the queues at airports I see passports in the hands of the vast majority of travellers, and the colour combined with the emblem/writing on the front ocmbined with the look of the person makes it quite obvious and or easy to identify their citizenship.

And in a show of national pride I always hold my passport by a corner, out from my body with the Irish harp outwards and in full view! A practice I see many nationalities doing but not all.

Quite odd once, when going through the Customs baggage checks in Copenhagen in the mid 90s, having landed from Heathrow, the Customs officers had stopped a load of Britons and were going through many bags, it was a long queue. But when I came up to the table, Irish passport held out for inspection they just looked at it, smiled and waved me thorugh. Then stopped the next Brits behind me. Make of it what you will.

I think there's something to be said for going bare. Pulling out a well worn, dogeared passport suggests a certain authenticity. Plus, the passport fits more easily and comfortably into a variety of pockets.

If you are going to get a cover for your passport, I suggest looking for a cover with a Faraday cage to restrict unauthorized reading of your RFID enabled passport.

I believe that certain Euro-sceptic members of the Sceptered Isle purchase replica old-style UK passport covers because they dislike the EU-burgundy passports issued nowadays. Although as a proud Scot I am looking forward to a new issue as they now have Scots Gaelic (as one of the official UK languages)

https://www.leathergoodsconnection.com/calwal.html has a passport case with credit card pockets. The passport is tucked in a pocket so easy to remove.

I'm happy with all the airline stickers that cover my passport, it looks funky!
