I would think that a passport cover would also serve as a means to prevent loss. None of the above posters seems concern with possible loss.

Why a cover is necessary as part of a means to prevent loss

I imagine a passport cover which might be attached somehow, for example, by a neck chain like an identity badge or whatever. The reason why the passcover cover is necessary is because without it I don't see how the passport could be attached without such a cover.

Loss of a passport or a key is very unpleasant, and I'm always interested in learning how to organise myself to prevent such loss.

PS: Smythson Eagle Emblem, etc. - Anyone who travels in even a small "safe" part of Europe can observe reasons why discretion about US passports is doubtlessly advisable; furthermore, even Europeans behave most discretely about their own identification documents.
