Hi everyone,

So I have a question that may be on par with asking who is buried in Grant's Tomb, but here goes...

Are the outsoles of Alden's shell cordovan shoes made of shell or calfskin? I notice the marking "Genuine Horween Shell Cordovan" on the outsole of new pairs (it quickly disappears with wear), but wondered whether that was just indicative of the shoe being shell (since a lined shoe masks the Horween labeling inside) or if it really applies to the outsole as well..

Much thanks for explaining what is probably obvious to everyone else!

The only thing that is shell cordovan is the (visible) shoe upper. Everything else, i.e. all linings, insole, outsole is cow hide.

The marking (as you said) is to signify the upper, not the sole.
