Hi friends,

I've searched the forums and found some older threads mentioning the subject but I didn't really find what I'm looking for. I'm hoping for some guidance.

I've recently become interested in one piece collars and have located a source online. I'm referring to Deo Veritas in Chicago. I'll try to break down my questions as clearly as possible here....

1. Are you a fan of one piece collars? Why or why not?

2. Are they meant to be worn strictly without a tie? I ask this because the ones offered at Deo Veritas are made with no top button. And in the images I've seen they all seem to be made this way.

3. Do you have any experience with Deo Veritas? How are they quality-wise in general?

It seems one of the advantages of this type of collar is that they stand up well and don't collapse under your jacket's lapels when worn without a tie. What confuses me is that the Deo Veritas offerings are either button down collars or hidden, under the collar buttons. Why would these be necessary if the collar is designed to stand and stay in place anyway?

I appreciate any advice and thanks in advance!

Hello Troones!,

I have numerous shirts with one piece collars. I believe they are also called a "Cooper Collar" but I may be incorrect about that. The business that I buy my shirts from calls them an "Italian Collar." Therefore I can give you a little bit of feedback based on my experience. I'll try to give my best advice based on your numbers.

1. Are you a fan of one piece collars? Why or why not?

I'm a big fan! One reason is the variety from a standard dress shirt. It's fun to "change it up" now and then. The second reason is that I just like the unique look with no collar band and how it flows right into the shirt. Most of mine also have a contrasting colored collar and interlining which is handsome. It is something you don't necessarily see very often (at least where I live) and therefore provides a little personal style.

2. Are they meant to be worn strictly without a tie? I ask this because the ones offered at Deo Veritas are made with no top button. And in the images I've seen they all seem to be made this way.

I can't speak for others, however none of the one piece collar shirts I own have a top button (although I suppose they could be made with one) and are therefore worn without a tie. I like them this way because I specifically bought them to be worn without a tie under a jacket/sport coat for a more casual, yet still dressy, look. I also occasionally wear them without a jacket when the purpose is to be even less formal (no jacket or tie) but I still just want to look nice by wearing a nice shirt. Also, once again, I just love the unique look, style, and collar size/shape. It is just a nice change of pace from wearing a standard dress shirt.

3. Do you have any experience with Deo Veritas? How are they quality-wise in general?

I have no experience with this company. Perhaps other members can weigh in on this.

None of the one piece collar shirts I own have button down collars, either visible or hidden. Therefore, I can't really say. My collars seem to stay in place and stand up quite nicely without any buttons.

In short, if this company seems reputable to you, has no minimum number of shirts you must order, and the prices are within your budget, I say go for it! Perhaps just buy one or two and give it a try. Any other questions and I'll try to help the best I can. I hope you find this information useful.

Troones,

You're welcome and glad I could help. I noticed though I made a small error in my reply. I stated, "Most of mine also have a contrasting colored collar and interlining." I reviewed my reply and what I meant to say was "contrasting colored collar and inner lining." What I'm getting at exactly is on my one piece collar shirts the entire collar, inside and out, is a contrasting color. Since the one piece collar (or "Italian Collar" as the business that makes my shirt calls it) flows into the shirt with no collar band, on the interior I have my shirt maker use the same fabric as the collar. Therefore a large part of the shirt's interior has a different colored/patterned fabric than the outer. To me anyway, it looks pretty sharp as I'm not wearing a tie and therefore the collar is open and portions of the interior of the shirt and collar are visible. This may be a minor point but people who understand shirt construction may have been scratching their heads and thinking, "Why in the world would you want a colored interlining? It's in between the cloth layers and doesn't even show!" I just thought I would clarify. Also, the business I use for shirts does an outstanding job making this style of shirt. I'm somewhat reluctant to name them as I'm a bit unclear about the forum rules and don't want to get accused of advertising (which most certainly would not be my intentions). If you're curious you could message me if you like. You don't have to of course it's just a suggestion as I'm merely trying to be helpful. Whatever you decide to do, let's hear how it turns out!
