Brooks Brothers has a sale, and I am looking for more fall/ winter colored chinos. How versatile is olive? Would these go with any of my sport coats, medium blue, brown and charcoal?

It's one of my favorite colors. I'm meeting with Hemrajani next week and while all I have in mind for sure is a brown glen plaid jacket, I'm giving some thought to a moleskin vest and matching trousers to go under it. Add a yellow pinstripe shirt and rust tie and I'm ready to go.

Would you say it works with what I have?

The images (on my 'phone at least) are of sufficiently low resolution that all three jackets appear as charcoal.

However, as with Sarge, I would be reluctant to pair olive with blue in this manner.

By the way, as I am ever driven to berate chaps who upload shots of themselves posed within scruffy environs, it seems only fair to praise Jeff for his tidy premises - well done that man!

Thank you Shaver. A messy home invites nothing but chaos in my opinion.

Olive is a great color, many different shades though. My main would be Gray, Navy and Tan. Brown and Olive after these. For chinos I would go with tan, olive, never navy, black is good, gray can be good. I just bought many chinos for fall and winter use. I actually went for Gap Vintage Straight. Inexpensive and a good fit, although inconsistent from pair to pair, color to color. You need patience with them and never be afraid to exchange. Watch the sales.

It appears as if the gentleman is a Marine. That explains a great deal.

Cheers,

Semper Fi @Jeff84 - I have olive trousers in a few different fabrics (chino cotton, wools of various weights, moleskin, linen, cotton/linen, etc.). Maybe it's the Marine in me, but I find olive to be extremely versatile - more so than just about any other shade of trousers I wear to the office. I probably wear olive at least 3 days a week, including with navy blazers but they really work best with jackets with any sort of browns (or burgundy, rust, maroon, etc.).

If you can wear olive, you can basically dress "British" - all the tweeds, plaids, earthen tones, driving caps, and the whole kit cascade into "natural" for you.

It's definitely your color. Mine too.

I myself tend to shy away from the "earthen" olives and such in a business setting, favoring more charcoals and heathery or Oxford grey - think of those as the "olive" of business attire.

I find olive works best as a flannel, since the "depth" of flannel lends a richness to green-ish hues (compared with gabardine and the like.)

The Marine in me isn't very good at coordinating colors. Thanks.
