I recently attended a commemoration by the School of Theology of University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee, to honor nine faculty members who, seventy years ago, resigned to protest the university Board of Regents' refusal to desegregate the School of Theology.
I was aware of the university's history of support for slavery, and it's emphasis on the history and values of the "Old South." I was somewhat surprised and encouraged by the depth of the institution's commitment to rectifying the errors of the past, and promoting a non-racist future for the university, and for the South.
Collaborating with the Episcopal Church, with which Sewanee is affiliated, the school of theology, and the university, are demonstrating that our society can move beyond racism, slavery's legacy, and Jim Crow. I was heartened and encouraged by what I observed and what I heard.
I'm hoping for a tie for Christmas, as if I needed another to not wear most of the days of the year.
Regards,
Gurdon
