Are the O’Connel’s Baracuta worth the $465 asking price?

No of course not. But take that and the following with a grain of salt because I don't particularly care for that type of jacket.

No desire to dissuade you from wanting one, but keep in mind they probably occur in small, medium, large and extra large. Which means they are not tailored clothing. And if I were to wear one, and I am fairly sleight of build, I would imagine I could wear a small and medium or a large and look about the same in all of them. So I wouldn't get overly hung up about receiving the wrong size. We used to call those windbreakers when I was in school, but up here being near the sea, it's a different kind of wind, and something more hardy is required.

Below is a picture of my short jacket, Banana Republic, 80 wool, 20 nylon with a quilt lining. The jacket you want has got to be available at spots in the US for a hundred and a half or less. Have you traversed eBay and the second hand sites, which often have new items?

Very nice garment, although I am looking for something lighter and wind and rain resistant.

From my casual scanning, I believe the O'Connell's Baracuta Harrington has a 100% cotton shell and a 100% cotton lining. The others seem to use various cotton and polyester blends. The others distinctive feature is raglan sleeves. Other than these features (and the label and the astronomical receipt), it seems to me they are all just windbreakers. They will all need some waterproofing treatment. Those with flannel lining may be a tiny bit warmer, but isn't that a job done better by a sweater? My own windbreaker is a 60 year old NWT London Fog for which I laid out nearly $20.

I'll say this: My Dad - who always made sure I had All the Correct Things - got me a Baracuta (British tan, I'd call it, like a khaki with a greenish hue) around... well, in the early 1980s (I was in high school). Sized up for layering, which is why I can still wear it (since the passing decades have, well, layered me a bit). I'm not going to call it "good as new", but it's in very fine condition. Nowadays I keep it in the boot of my car "just in case" (perhaps laughably given my residency in Atlanta), and I have no idea what it cost in the early 80s ("thanks, Dad"), but whatever it was it was a good value. I kind of hesitate to do the math, but it's coming up on 45 years old.

Now, it's arguable whether the contemporary garment is of comparable quality (unlikely), but even at half the longevity - and if you can dispose of the income with little pain - it's probably worth buying.

In June 1980, the full retail price of the “Original G9 Baracuta” jacket was $45.00 ($176.29 in today’s dollars). That was a fairly substantial outlay for a lightweight jacket back then—even though it is nowhere near $129.00, which is what a new G9 would have needed to sell for back then in order to correspond to today’s price of the G9 ($499.00).

I support the free market system. Willing buyers, happy sellers. Wonderful. They make the world go ‘round and all that. Thus, while an authentic G9 Baracuta isn’t worth $499.00 to me, I’m not the least bit fazed when people today, on their own free will, cough up that amount for a jacket that’s the real deal.

I researched and even if you are fine with the price the sizing is all over the place. But you only have to insure the size is not too small. A little large and nobody really cares. Even so, if you want the original good luck with UK sizing charts. So my advice, try it on first and I know that limits things. And here is something else. I believe I read it was originally designed for golfers. Not sure if you play golf but as a lifelong former golfer I can tell you everything golf wear is overpriced and mostly made of synthetics. Which means by quality clothing standards it’s garbage. Windbreakers are Windbreakers are Windbreakers. I remember in HS wanting a burnt orange one like what Coach Akers used to wear. At one time everyone had a windbreaker of sorts. Just guessing but weren’t the Members Only jackets a supposed upgrade?

I bought the real deal from J. Press a year ago that I suspect is the same as what O'Connell's sells. Much better than the Brooks Brothers knock off I bought in the early 90s. They run slim and the zipper is a bit finicky. Overall a great old school jacket.
