Hi all,

Yesterday I was in my local Nordstrom and saw a little made-to-measure kiosk. No one was there to answer questions about price but the concept looked pretty interesting. Coming from someone who's used to buying $300 sale suits from Macys, I'm not ready (just yet) to go fully bespoke. This MTM seems like a good stepping stone in that direction. I really like the concept of being able to pick the exact pattern/fabric I want and getting a decent fit for my future suits.

Anyone had any success or caution with Nordstrom MTM?

Thanks.

You have to be careful about Nordstom MTM. I don't know about the suits but last time I was in the store they had a nice table set up trying to sell MTM dress shirts with samples of the shirts and fabric samples attached to cards and such. They were advertising a 100s Egyptian Cotton shirt for $90 so I asked the salesman about it (I am larger around the midrift and have wanted to go MTM or custom for some time). He said that they were not really MTM in the literal sense. No body measurements are taken. Basically you are just picking the design of the shirt you want - along with the standard collar and sleeve sizes. For example one could say I want a 16.5 34 with spread collar and french cuffs out of this specific material. But you could not say - "I want 3 extra inches around the waist." So to me they should NOT be advertising this service as MTM. Its more like MAM (Mix and Match).

I agree with DorianGrey. Nordstrom's MTM shirts are limited to collar size, sleeve length, fabric choice, collar style and cuff type. They can't customize the body of the shirt other than full or tailored cut. Better than OTR but far from a real MTM or bespoke.

I agree with the previous posters. I am not familiar with Nordstrom's MTM
shirt service, but based on my conversations with the suit department in
their local store (Palo Alto), I wouldn't go near them. I suggest that you visit
San Francisco where a number of stores have men's departments with
knowledgeable staff. Off hand, I would recommend The Hound on Sutter.
Some forum posters like Patrick James in the City. To me their clothes
look like upscale Joseph A Banks. At a much higher price point is Wilkes,
Nieman Marcus Saks, Barney's. Another independent mens store you
might check out is Maloufs in Burlingame. Their merchandise is a bit flashy
for my semi trad taste but sales people seem to be very professional.

Good Luck!
