Yeah, right. I'll welcome a $640 J. Crew suit into my wardrobe right around the time I welcome a 9mm lead slug into my brain.

But think about it. If he's right, and people don't want logos on their sutff anymore, he could be starting a trend that others like Ralph Lauren might emulate. That would be a welcome change for those of us who don't want to be a retailer's walking billboard:icon_smile:

What I read was that this new "line" will be better than the current line (made in Canada or Mexico) and comparable to department store lines (Armani, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Burberry etc). To me, $640 is cheaper than the 1k these lines go for. And personally, I find the workmanship in JCrew stuff to be pretty good for the value.

I think the time is right for a high quality, well made upmarket brand, but i don't know if anyone will buy clothes like that from J. Crew. It's going to be hard for them to trade up under that brand name.

yeah... and even though they've started a new brand, i'm not sure how much i like the name "madewell." if it's a good product, they don't have to justify the product as being "made well," right? haha.

I don't have a problem with J Crew stuff - in fact, I really like their 'essential' chinos.

If they are going to 'split' lines - one high end ('Madewell' is a terrible name) and the other/current line - what is going to happen to the other/current line? Will it go the way of Abercrombie & Fitch in the mid-90s?

I have no problem with J Crew's apparels as it serves its own purpose in the wardrobe at the right price and I share his sentiment below

""Designer goods have become much too available, either through their own distribution or through logo counterfeiting. I see the world moving away from carrying a bag around with the designer's initials or designer's logo," says Drexler. "The more you see of anything, the less special it becomes. It's kind of like the first slice of pizza vs. the sixth. The first you're like, 'God, this is amazing!' The sixth you're like, 'Enough already.'""

the suit looks very promising IMO. 3 button rolled to 2, slim fitting, natural shoulder suit. very youthful and good for the tall and lean trads. might compete against BB fitzgerald suits.

will visit the store on my early sept. trip and report back.

Not only a 3/2 roll and buttoning cuffs, but if you watch the video he talks
about the importance of a natural shoulder (very little padding), and the
absence of glue in the "floating" chest piece.

Bravo!

Hope this catches on, and the trend continues. If other retailers are affected by this, maybe Brooks Brothers will re-introduce some kind of
sack suit to their lineup!

They just opened a madewell store in Atlanta last week. One of my friends that works part time at one of the Atlanta J Crew's told me they only carry women's clothing.

This suit is a move in the right direction. I plan to check it out.

I don't buy much from J Crew, but what I have bought has been of decent quality although I have to admit that I frequented the store much more 10-15 years ago. I feel a little on the old side when I enter the store these days, especially since the employees are typically young kids that know nothing about clothing. I feel much more comfortable at BB where they at least have intelligent employees (at least in the store I frequent) whom I have gotten to know over the years.

This hasn't convinced me that J. Crew is worth a look yet. While this new suit looks promising, I got a BB Southwick Saxxon suit with functioning buttonholes and all of my tailoring for less than $600- which is an arm and a leg better (considering it's USA made by the very reputable Southwick) than what it looks like J. Crew is offering. J. Crew seems, though, a bit different here than on the East Coast. I say that because in Madison we don't really have the market for some of their nicer stuff (and the people who would buy it are actually fairly trad/traditional and go to a locally owned store).

It's like the Mackintosh they're selling. Even if it gets to Madison, which I doubt it will, It won't sell and will just be a nice backdrop to the rest of the stuff they're selling. When it goes on sale, it will be looked at and then denied by their more "preppy" than trad clientele. But it still won't sell.

J. Crew has a niche market, and that's the "preppy" element. Most of the people who shop there probably aren't going to ever see or be interested in Madewell, so why have the connection at all? It's like Bloomingdale's and Macy's. They're both owned by Macy's, Inc (M) but don't advertise that. There are lots of people who shop at Bloomingdale's who wouldn't step foot in a Macy's. For a strategic move, this new store might work. For an extention of the J. Crew line/idea, it won't.

I'd welcome it if it was of a cut and quality that I liked. I'm not wedded to any particular brand- if Hollister suddenly began selling 3-b sacks of Brooks or J. Press quality from domestic manufacturers (i.e. I woke up and found myself in the Twilight Zone) I'd probably buy from them too.
