Picture this:
It's a cold Winter night. I've just left a restaurant after having a nice dinner with my wife. A few doors down is our local main line BB store. In the windows and on a stand by the door are big red signs announcing the 40% off sale. Just out of curiosity my wife asks to go in and do a little browsing. I feign surprise about the sale, (after all I haven't been in there in 3 days) ;). While she browses so do I.

Now picture this in your minds eye. I am dressed in a blue OCBD, navy moleskin trousers, black Chelsea boots, a burgundy sweater, and navy duffle coat. So far so good right? When what do I see but this.

Azure Purple Textile Sleeve Collar

Now I've never been a fan, but somehow in a sweater vest the Black Watch was intriguing. Plus I'm already dressed for it.

Taking off my sweater, I slip it on. The saleswoman swoons, two salesmen nearby comment that it was perfect on me with what I was already wearing. I gaze into the mirror and reconsider my indifference to Black Watch.

I put on the duffle coat, take another look and think "Yes, this can work." I locate my wife to show her my new find. $498 marked down to $199.20! I can't believe my good fortune. This could be the beginning of a new appreciation for a classic.

She takes one look and makes a sour face. No, it doesn't go with my navy trousers she proclaims. It's too coordinated a look for a man. Besides she's seen that pattern in her catalogues, it's a woman's pattern and it's a horrible combination of colors. Navy, green, and black just don't go together like that. It's probably on sale because they can't get anyone to buy it. I dress so classically, why would I want something so gaudy (...................................................wait for it.....................................................) am I trying to look gay?:icon_headagainstwall:

I didn't dare try on the dinner jacket they had.

A cautionary tale indeed!

But $500!?!? From Brooks!?!?

Is it made by Scottish Fairies of yarn spun and woven of Unicorn down?

For sure it's overpriced. They must be getting like JAB. Put a ridiculous price on an item and expect to sell it on deep discount and still turn a tidy profit.

I've always wondered, how is looking gay an insult? Seems a compliment.

It wasn’t meant as an insult. From a sartorial point of view the stereotype would be a well put together man. I think she was referencing the more flamboyant GTH dressers, and that I would be presenting an image at odds with my orientation. Remember she views Black Watch as a women’s style as she sees it in the Neiman Marcus, Saks, etc. catalogs. Plus she thinks it’s inherently an ugly, gaudy combination.

You know, not the way real men dress!

And while we're on the subject of dressing gay, two of my personal sartorial heroes are gay sartorial heroes. (And have done some other stuff too. ;))

We have -

Bunny Roger: Couturier, original inspiration for John Steed of The Avengers and war hero.

John Waters: Film maker of counter culture indies when you needed brass ****s to do it. Self acknowledged odd duck with a wild self-deprecating sense of humor. Has a unique take on dress that's entirely wrong . . . . for everyone but him.

As the most conspicuous of AAAC's resident gay posters, I have read this thread with a great deal of bemusement.

I find it fascinating how people in general have different associations with certain color combos or patterns. Black watch plaid, to me, is the ultimate in WASP-ola fashion - something that only a male of the proper lineage living in Fairfield County, CT would wear as a matter of course, and certainly not a pattern affected by the female of the species.

As it is, I don't especially like the vest - I think that SWMBO has saved momsdoc from a minor fashion faux pas.

As for her identification of a gentleman with an acute sense of fashion coordination as being gay, I do my best to reinforce that positive stereotype :).

For the record, the gentleman with the Tumblr account and a heavily pronounced taste for black watch plaid, I have met him, and he fulfills neither momsdoc's wife, nor my preconception of the typical consumer of clothing in such patterns, as he's obviously not WASP from his photos, and he definitely not gay (I've had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago, and he's a great guy, with a very nice wife.)
