Hello,

Robert here. 34 year old male living in Sugar Land, TX (near Houston). Work as a Sales manager in the Oil & Gas industry. I was just told that I need to relocate to the London, UK area for 6 months!

Woohoo!

The issue is that I don't have good Winter gear! and also looking for Oxford Button Down collar Shirts.

Do you have any recommendations for a Winter Jacket, Gloves, Boots, Long John's and OBCD's?

I prefer online shopping where possible.

Thanks,
Robert

Buy the OCBD in the States - they're difficult to find here. As someone said in another thread about buying a Barbour jacket, a Barbour jacket is one of the five things in the UK that are cheaper than in the US (our sales tax is 20% and the unit prices are higher). So wait until you get here and then buy a Barbour (if that works for what you need - a wool overcoat would be safer if your dressing business formal).

Thank you Balfour!

Thanks Balfour.

What is the best source to get the Barbour jacket in the UK? Online or in store?

Is there a good source in the USA to get Oxford Button Down Collar shirts? (OBCD's)?

What type of footwear do you recommend for walking around on those cold, snowy Winter days?

Thanks,
Robert

I'd go to a store and check out what works for you - there's one on Regent Street. They come in all sorts of different lengths and colours. Then see if offers a better price.

Can't help on OCBDs.

Rain is a bigger problem than snow - snow is a rarity. The weather is generally less extreme than in the US. I have a 'beater' pair of shoes for every three pairs or so that I use on rainy days. Be aware, brown shoes with dark suits still has some baggage over here - my views and other contrary views are set out in this thread: https://askandyaboutclothes.com/com...s-formal-occasions&highlight=poll+brown+shoes

If you want to dress like a local, wait till you're there to buy clotihng. I buy most of my winter clothing in Montreal, but perfectly serviceable (if expensive) kit is available in Lethbridge, where I live.

You probably will need some kind of dressy jacket. I suggest you get something in dark blue or black wool. I have a tweed overcoat as well, but I don't wear it except to places where I will be standing around outside in the snow.

Instead of buying boots for business, get some comfortable, beater boots. Then change into a pair of dress shoes when you arrive at work. The boots you wear on the commute should also be durable enough to wear in the field.

As for OCBDs, I get most of mine at the Bay.

Which part of the UK? If you're up in Aberdeen, it'll be considerably colder than the southwest where it rarely snows and isn't frosty that often. In London, for example, you aren't going to need long john's but a hat and gloves occasionally come in useful, though plenty of people won't even both with those.

It does rain a lot, and always seems to be windy at the same time, so a supply of cheap umbrellas and a decent rain coat are useful. I can vouch for these people making nice coats.

When finished looking at Barbour jackets on Regent Street, cross the road and head up towards Oxford Circus. Half way up you'll find a very large Brooks Brothers. There you will find all the American style OCBDs you'll need!

True, but he'll probably pay the dollar price in pounds for the privilege (at least if the prices I remember in BB in DC from last year hold good).
